"Arise and Shine!"
One of the reasons I love being an Episcopalian is that our church marks time liturgically, passing from one distinct season into another. Each liturgical season has its own color and themes associated with it: from the purple of Lent that highlights our need for repentance to the long season of Ordinary time each summer (and most of our life is more day-to-day ordinary than high times of feasting), in the Church we move to God's rhythms and seasons.
In January and February, as the days slowly begin to lengthen, adding minutes and then hours of light to our dark days, the Church finds itself in the season of Epiphany when we recognize that the Light of Christ shines for the whole world to see. One new way to emblazon that light is with the Burning of the Greens: we'll burn the branches we used to decorate the Advent wreath along with Christmas trees and wreaths. The warmth and light of the fire are powerful symbols of hope in the dark, cold of winter, and also symbolize Jesus as a light to the world. Join us on Saturday, February 11th at 2pm when we'll have a short time of prayer as we burn our greens (bring some from home!). We'll have cocoa, hot cider, and marshmallows, too. I hope to see you!
Blessings,
Rev Jill
