This Sunday's Sermon and Song List

It can be easy to read certain portions of the Old Testament and get a bit discouraged by how many times we see the people of God fail and falter in their faith. Last week we saw how our faithlessness often shows itself as a desire to take and control rather than ask God and wait on Him. After what Jacob did to his father you might expect God to remove His blessing or back out on His promise. But instead, we see something truly great. God will not let HIStory be defined by our failures. No. God will have His story defined by grace. So, this week, after we consider the sorrows and troubles that come from faithlessness, we will look at Genesis 28 and consider the "Right Responses to God's Grace."

To get yourself ready to sing on Sunday you can start listening to the songs we'll be singing together:

  • The Only Name (Yours Will Be)
  • 10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)
  • Because He Lives (Amen)
  • Great Are You Lord
  • Your Name

We created a playlist on Youtube in case you want to start listening today. You can find that by clicking HERE.

Men's Movie Night

Thursday, August 4th at 7:00PM the men of Discovery are invited to watch Collision. Collision is a documentary film that follows the debate tour between Pastor Doug Wilson and the late Atheist Christopher Hitchens. The movie chronicles their debate over the question, "Is Christianity Good for the World?" The film gives a great example of the arguments against modern atheism AND it shows that Christianity can be defended with dignity, joy, confidence in Scripture, and no apologies!

Women's Bible Study!
Understand that works don’t save us, rather good works follow true faith as our beliefs and actions line up with each other.

James had a unique earthly relationship with Jesus, but his letter clarifies what the Christian life should look like for us all. The Book of James is filled with practical wisdom for Christians, calling us to live out genuine faith through good works, but it is also rooted in rich theology. Perhaps more than any other book in the New Testament, James emphasizes the application of Christian belief.

This 13-session study examines the core message of James: the relationship between faith and works. In our own ability, we cannot stand in the face of adversity. Without faith we could never find the strength to trust God. We would never be able to see above the trials we meet and to keep our eyes focused on the King while counting our trials as joy. This is the essence of James. We don’t work to be saved; we work because we are saved. Faith apart from works can never be sustained.

This study will be offered on Thursday mornings at 9:00am. Childcare is provided. Books are $15. If you have any questions please contact the church office.

Philippians is a profound call to joy! One of the things that makes it especially profound is that Paul wrote it from prison. Imagine that! A man in prison, with joy! The church has the same amazing opportunity today: to have profound joy in times of great trouble. This amazing letter shows an intensely personal pastoral call to joy in Christ, gospel focus, doctrinal seriousness, intense prayer and growth in Christ-likeness. We will simply walk through this book, verse by verse, and sit under this timeless call to unique Christian joy.
