AGC/VT Weekly Contractor Update

May 18, 2026

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental health in construction isn't talked about enough. Suicide rates in construction are among the highest of any industry, and people are dealing with stress, burnout, and anxiety a lot more than they let on.

In this week's Toolbox Talk, Richard and Ben talk about checking in on your crew, looking out for each other, and how even small acts of kindness can make a difference:

5 Things VT Contractors Need to

Know This Week

  1. The suicide rate in construction is roughly four times the national average. Mental Health Awareness Month is a good reminder to check in with your crew and make sure people know they're not alone. Check out AGC/VT's Mental Health resources HERE.

  2. At some point, every contractor steps away from the business they built. The question is whether that transition protects the company's value, or puts it at risk. Industry experts Kittell, Branagan, & Sargent break down what Vermont construction firms need to know about succession planning. Read the full article HERE.

  3. Take advantage of the final training classes before Fall. AGC/VT is offering Entry Level Driver Training, TCT, Flagging, MSHA refreshers, OSHA 10, and Fire Alarm courses. Register HERE.

  4. The Legislature’s push toward adjournment continues, with housing, permitting reform, labor mandates, and workforce shortages all still moving targets under the Golden Dome. Contractors should keep a close eye on late-session negotiations tied to Act 181, prevailing wage, overtime expansion, and transportation funding as major bills continue shifting in committee. Get the field report HERE.

  5. Scoops for Safety is back for Summer 2026. Scoops for Safety brings Island Homemade Ice Cream to jobsites across Vermont and uses it as a simple, fun way to spark safety conversations. Read more HERE.
