Living with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome affects far more than the physical body—it can also bring emotional, psychological, and social challenges that often go unseen. Many patients report feelings of anxiety, low mood, frustration, or loss of confidence as they adapt to changes in appearance, communication, and daily life.

Below, you’ll find insights from Dr. Corah Lewis, Clinical Psychologist at Oxford University Hospitals, along with helpful resources and self-help materials designed to support emotional wellbeing and resilience for those living with RHS and their loved ones.

Psychological Impact of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome

Dr. Corah Lewis, Clinical Psychologist, Oxford University Hospitals

Being diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) can be a very difficult experience. In addition to physical symptoms discussed elsewhere on this website, many people experience a profound psychological and social impact. These effects are not always visible to others, but they are very real, and they can be just as challenging as the physical symptoms.

It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed in the early stages. Many people report feeling anxious, low in mood, or uncertain about what the future will hold. For some, the emotional impact may improve as physical symptoms begin to resolve, but for others, they can persist. Everyone is different and will feel different in themselves after being

diagnosed with RHS. Below, we have summarized what we know from the research and clinical experience about the psychological impact of RHS. Some of the areas discussed may be relevant to you, some may not. We have also included information about how you can go on to seek psychological support.

Promoting awareness of RHS: Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) is the second most common cause of facial paralysis, yet diagnosis is frequently missed or delayed increasing the risk of long-term complications.

Promote patient and physician education: We are providing open access information to help prevent misdiagnosis and ensure proper treatment and provide guidelines informing providers how to recognize and treat RHS.
