Mental Health Screening

With physical medicine providers taking a leading role in managing pain and whole person health, using assessments for behavioral health becomes imperative. Assess your patient’s behavioral health with the following screening tools.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2-item (GAD-2) - Mental Health Screening - National HIV Curriculum (uw.edu)

  • PHQ-2 A sum of 3 points is the preferred cut-off for identifying possible cases in which further diagnostic evaluation for an anxiety disorder is warranted.
  • PHQ-9 A score by adding all nine items to get a total score from 0-27.
  • GAD-2. A sum of 3 points is the preferred cut-off for identifying possible cases and in which further diagnostic evaluation for generalized anxiety disorder is warranted.
  • GAD-7 scores by adding all 7 items, giving a total score from 0 to 21.

Next steps would include referral to primary care or other physician for further assessment. Also, the consideration of self-care strategies such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness, daily movement, journaling, and spending time in nature.
