The Law Society recently announced that all mentorship programs will be housed under one roof using an online system, making the process of matching easier for mentors and mentees alike.

The upcoming program year will begin on Sept. 16, 2025 and run until April 30, 2026.

All new and returning mentors and mentees must complete the new mentor and mentee registration forms, as our Terms and Conditions have been updated. Once registered, the Mentorship Team will send you an email that will include a link to Mentorship Rocket and further instructions on how to log in and use the platform.  

Mentorship Program Recruitment: Mentees

We are excited to share that we already have a significant number of experienced professionals signed up as mentors for Mentor Express and Mentor Connect. This wide selection of mentors poses an excellent opportunity for mentees to build connections, gain new perspectives and empower their professional development. If you are interested in receiving tailored support and guidance from a mentor, we encourage you to register as a mentee.

This resource highlights the following obligations that all lawyers should be mindful of: 

• Statements that a lawyer or firm is the “leading,” “top,” “best” or “most experienced” lawyer or firm, or using like wording, is prohibited under the Code of Conduct (Chapter 4) as it suggests qualitative superiority to other lawyers.  

• Statements that a lawyer or firm is a “specialist” or “expert” in Alberta, or that they “specialize” or have “expertise” in specific areas, is also prohibited under the Code as Alberta does not certify specialists. Alberta lawyers can identify their “preferred practice areas” in their marketing. 

• Unauthorized use of another organization’s logo, including use of the Law Society logo, incorrectly implies that you are associated with or endorsed by that organization. Logos are often legally protected intellectual property and unauthorized use can result in penalties and legal action.

Desk Divorce Packages – Three-Strike Rejection Notice Rule

Effective Sept. 1, 2025, King’s Bench Operations (KBO) will commence a pilot project on desk divorce packages submitted by counsel and agents. All desk divorce package submissions, whether filed digitally or submitted via email by counsel or by agent, will be subject to a three-strike rule. The aim of this project is to place greater responsibility on counsel to conduct a thorough review of their submissions prior to filing. It is anticipated that the number of incomplete or unsuitable submissions will decrease, thereby reducing the time spent by KBO on repeated reviews and rejections. The goal is to improve efficiency and streamline the processing of divorce applications.
