MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT CHAIR

I’m sitting here, a few days after the 2026 New Year, thinking about what to write for the district newsletter. It seems an appropriate time to say “thank you” and a Happy New Year.

Scouting is one of those things that truly takes a village to implement. Of course, unit leaders (including all assistants) are front and center for most of the activities, but every unit also has those behind-the-scenes people who keep the wheels on. This includes committee members, fundraising chairs, activity chairs, advancement chairs, and chartered organization representatives, to name just a few.

At the district level, our unit commissioners engage with every unit, acting as a liaison to the district. Our many other district staff provide programs for the youth, provide training for adult leaders, guide Eagle Scout candidates on their Eagle journey, assist with youth recruitment, recruit adults to the district committee, and manage the administrative aspects of the district.

Right now, we have a few more than 900 young men and women in Mercer Area District. On behalf of all the youth, the ones who have been in the program in the past, and the ones who will be in the program in the future, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone in an adult volunteer role.

Because of your dedication to the Scouting program and leadership you offer, the young men and women in our units are learning life skills, learning to be better citizens, and learning leadership. Again, THANK YOU for everything you are doing.

District Chair, Mercer Area District

COMMISSIONERS CORNER

Mercer Area District is in need of people that can help our units. We, the unit commissioners, are volunteers to assist your unit as a friend, counselor, and mentor to unit leaders. In order to help our units, we need more face-to-face time with our awesome leaders! Your commissioners should be reaching out for unit visits, but we do ask that you also let us know when you’re doing something awesome!

Have a Blue & Gold, Court of Honor, or other fun or special event coming up? Let us know! One of the upsides to our Commissioner Patrol is that you now have a team that may be available for your big moments. While we’re always here to help with problems, we also want to be there for the really good moments.

So, ACTION ITEMS:

  • Contact your Commissioner Patrol with good days to visit either a unit meeting or event.
  • Interested in more info on being part of our commissioner team? Please reach out to District Commissioner, Victor Vergara, who will be in touch!

ADVANCEMENT

Updated Merit Badge Requirements

The Scouts BSA Merit Badge program is kept vibrant and current with updated requirements every January 1. This year, there are significant updates to 69 merit badges. Notably, significant updates to Personal Fitness permit adaptations for differently-abled scouts so that virtually any Scout can challenge themselves and benefit from this important Eagle-required merit badge. Scouts and especially counselors are encouraged to review the new requirements. Access link below.

Enriched Online Merit Badge Resources

More than 50 merit badges have been enriched with curated digital resources (videos, websites, documents) on scouting.org, and more are being rolled out every month. In addition, throughout 2026, many badges will be augmented with Digital Resource Guides, which are immersive interactive courses designed to enrich and guide Scouts and counselors as the badge is earned. Aviation was an initial prototype, and Family Life was released at the end of 2025. More to come! Finally additional activities have been added to the Merit Badge Test Lab. Scouts can challenge themselves with these activities, and fill out a survey recommending them to be made official merit badges…or not!
