Using Digital Tools to Strengthen the Merit Badge Experience.
The Scouts BSA Merit Badge program is undergoing an exciting update, with new digital tools to enhance, entertain, and engage scouts. Earlier this year, all merit badge pamphlets were made available as free digital downloads at scouting.org. Right on the heels of that update, digital resources such as videos, games, checklists and AI enhancements are being added to individual merit badges, both on scouting.org and in Scoutbook Plus. Over 30 badges have been updated to date, with more coming. (See Camping, Nature, and Stamp Collecting for specific examples.)
New Resource for Merit Badge Counselors!
As new digital resources become available, it’s exciting and challenging to adapt and integrate their use in the merit badge program. Our technology is changing and evolving, and Scouting should work to embrace these new ideas and technologies while keeping what makes Scouting meaningful — the personal connections, character-building, and the power of adult mentorship and interactions in a young person’s life.
