MERCER COUNTY DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT FOR FEBRUARY........


DISTRICT ATTORNEY OF MERCER COUNTY


The District Attorney serves as the chief law enforcement official for Mercer County. The District Attorney's office is responsible for representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania within the criminal justice system, prosecuting all criminal offenses and motor vehicle violations that occur within the county. This role necessitates regular appearances in the Magisterial District Justice Courts, the Court of Common Pleas, the Pennsylvania Appellate Courts, and Federal Courts. District Attorney Peter C. Acker fulfills these responsibilities on a full-time basis, supported by a team of Assistant District Attorneys and investigators, in addition to both full-time and part-time support personnel.

IN EACH EDITION FOR 2025


  • Mercer County was created from a portion of Allegheny County on March 12, 1800, by an Act of the Assembly of Pennsylvania. Its government remained a part of Crawford County until 1802, and its Courts were conducted in Meadville until 1804.
  • The original Mercer County was nearly 900 square miles, with a population of 3,228. A southern section was set off to Lawrence County in 1849, to make Mercer County its current 675 square miles.
  • The original townships into which the County was divided in 1804 were Cool Spring, Wolf Creek, Sandy Creek, Salem, Neshannock and Pymatuning.
  • Total taxes raised by the six townships that year were $1,474, including a high of $380 from Neshannock, and a low of $86 from Pymatuning.
  • Mercer County and the Borough of Mercer were named after Bridgadier General Hugh Mercer, a native of Scotland who was killed in the 1777 Battle of Princeton. He was a renowned military figure of the Colonial Era and a close friend of General George Washington.

Mercer County Pennsylvania is rich in natural beauty and small-town charm, with tourism being an important component of our economy. According to Tourism Economics – An Oxford Economic Company’s report in February 2022 -- direct domestic visitor spending accounted for $309 million injected into our communities. That number does not include the many visitors from Canada. The county employs 2,442 people in the travel sector, producing $66 million in income labor, $15 million in PA state and local taxes, and $16 million in federal taxes. Mercer County’s tourism industry indicates resilience and stability, which are valuable sources of revenue. As the designated Tourist Promotion Agency, VisitMercerCountyPA’s 

mission is to expand and strengthen travel and tourism while enhancing the overall economy.

OFFICER OF THE YEAR


Congratulations to Officer Jason Cochran who works at the Mercer County Jail. Officer Cochran was voted Officer of the Year by his co-workers for the outstanding job he does. He will be presented with a Proclamation from the Mercer County Commissioners at their February 6th public meeting -- 3pm in the Assembly Room of the Courthouse.
