From Mr. Florence
I hope everyone kept safe and warm during the Winter Vortex of dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills throughout Northeast Ohio. The forecast for the weekend calls for warmer temperatures. The closing of Shaker Heights City Schools was heavily publicized. To be certain that you receive emergency notifications from the school district, go to http://www.shaker.org/communications.aspx and see the information under “Select Your Automated Messaging Preferences.” Notifications from School Messenger can be sent via phone, text and email. You can change telephone numbers or email addresses with the Mercer office at any time, but address changes must be done through the Registrar’s Office.

Mid-year MAP testing is complete with the exception of a few make-ups. Results for Mercer students who took MAP in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade will be sent home via backpack mail on Friday, February 8 along with a handout of how to read the report. Questions about the assessment can be referred to me through your student’s classroom teacher.

Students were able to enjoy our annual Mercer New and Used Book Fair in spite of the school closing this week. The Used Book Fair continues to be a highlight during my tenure at Mercer. Each student receives three to four books, which can have a profound impact on one of life’s foundational skills of reading. The Mercer community provided book donations and numerous volunteers, making this another event that helped make a difference for our students. Well done!

Mercer continues on the path to another successful school year. Specific questions, concerns and situations may arise from time to time. How these specific incidences are addressed is very important to me and the Shaker Heights City Schools. Please know I can be reached via telephone at 216-295-4065, my district cell at 216-401-7622 or email at florence_j@shaker.org . If it’s important to you, it is equally important to me.

Mercer Grad Giving Back

Hello! My name is Jasmine Collier. I am a sophomore at Shaker Heights High School, and I used to attend Mercer Elementary School. There were a lot of little things that I remember fondly about Mercer including playing in the snow at recess.

I will be working with Mercer to periodically collect items that Mercer needs. Mercer greatly appreciates spare clothing items for students who may need them in emergencies. Currently, we are asking for donations of sweat pants sizes 6 -14 and snow pants sizes 6 -14.

It is easy to participate. Please email me at  jccollier1@yahoo.com  if you can donate and give me your home address. On February 9, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. I will come to you and get the items. Please leave them in a bag on your front porch.

Thank you so much!!
Jasmine Collier
Attention all 2019/2020 Woodbury parents!!!

The Woodbury PTO Council is working to fill its PTO Council slate for the next school year. In order to make it a successful year for our students we need YOUR support! If you are interested in holding a position or learning more please contact Eileen Linz, Woodbury PTO Nominating Chair, at elinz76@gmail.com .

If a council position is not up your alley there are plenty of other committees and student events that need volunteers and support. Hope to hear from you!
