From Mr. Florence
Mercer conducts all school assemblies every month led by our 3rd and 4th grade Ambassadors. They are centered around different International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile Attributes. Today we had our meeting for November with the IB Learner Profile Attribute of reflective . These school gatherings include reviewing proper voice levels for the hallways, reciting the Mercer IB Pledge, conducting a mindful moment with RULER Tools, and singing the IB Song. The time together helps to promote the behavior we want to see from our students and promotes school spirit. Plus, the Mercer Meerkat is always in attendance to help out!

Mercer Elementary has been and continues to be an excellent school. We have a great staff, amazing families, and we are an authorized International Baccalaureate World School.  The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) is based on two important characteristics. The first is the philosophy that students will learn through inquiry. Secondly, the program is a framework with important components including curriculum, language, character and service.

Why is this important for your child’s education? Instruction at a PYP school provides rigor to student learning through the IB framework. This serves the whole child, allowing your children to make deeper connections to the content being taught with a global outlook. This is a great benefit to both students and staff to be aware of our cultural diversity and learning the importance of community.

Talking To Children About Their Disability/Learning Difference

Join the PTO Special Needs/Learning Difference Parent/Guardian Group for a discussion with Dr. Beth Anne Martin, Cleveland Clinic pediatric psychologist, on Thursday November 15 at 7:00 PM at the Shaker Middle School Library.  Dr. Martin will outline an approach parents can use to discuss a diagnosis with their child and will also touch on explaining the child’s diagnosis to siblings and classroom peers.  All are welcome to attend!

For the most direct access to the Middle School Library, enter the MS building through the recessed doorway, marked “Main Office Entrance,” near the eastern end of the building by the gym.  Go through the double doors and the library is straight ahead on the left.
