MARLINS MAKING HEADLINES

Spanish Students Experience DIA

Our Spanish IV and AP Spanish Language & Culture students visited the Detroit Institute of Arts to experience the Día de Muertos Ofrendas exhibit, learning about the beautiful Mexican tradition of honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed. Inspired by their visit, students brought their learning to life by creating their own ofrendas in the classroom, connecting language, culture and creativity in a meaningful way.

A Taste of France Comes to Life at Cuisine Restaurant

On October 27, Madame Campbell's students in Mercy’s new French 3 course, “A Taste of France,” traded their classroom for the professional kitchen of Cuisine Restaurant, where they enjoyed an extraordinary hands-on culinary experience with owner and Executive Chef Paul Grosz and his Sous-Chef, Ryan.

This special culinary experience had been in the making since August, when Chef Paul graciously accepted Madame Campbell's invitation to collaborate on an immersive cooking lesson designed specifically for her new French 3 course. Together, they worked to bring this unique educational opportunity to life, combining authentic French cuisine with hands-on learning in a professional restaurant kitchen.

This unique field trip brought French language, culture, and gastronomy to life as students stepped into the role of apprentice chefs to prepare an authentic, multi-course French dinner. The recipes, provided by Madame Joyce Campbell, came directly from a culinary school in Paris that she attended this past summer. Under the expert guidance of Chef Paul and Ryan, students enthusiastically participated in every stage of the culinary process, from preparation and cooking to the final presentation of each dish.

The impressive menu featured:

  • Entrée: Salade de Chèvre Chaud aux Pommes Grillées – Warm goat cheese salad with grilled apples.
  • Plat Principal: Magret de Canard à la Sauce aux Échalotes – Duck breast with shallot sauce, accompanied by Gratin Dauphinois (creamy scalloped potatoes) and Légumes de Saison Rôtis (roasted seasonal vegetables, including parsnips, carrots, eggplant, and turnips).
  • Dessert: Clafoutis aux Baies Mélangées – A traditional French baked fruit dessert featuring mixed berries, served with freshly prepared Crème Chantilly.

The culinary lesson was conducted bilingually, allowing students to strengthen their French vocabulary while developing an appreciation for the techniques, precision, and artistry of classic French cooking. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect classroom learning with an authentic cultural experience.

Once their creations were complete, students gathered in the restaurant's elegant dining room to enjoy the delicious dinner they had prepared. They were honored to be joined by Chef Paul, who generously shared stories about his professional training, culinary journey, and passion for French cuisine. His insights offered students a personal glimpse into the dedication and creativity behind the culinary profession.

This inaugural culinary field trip was a milestone for Mercy's new French 3 curriculum, “A Taste of France,” a course designed to explore French history, geography, traditions, and culture through the art of gastronomy. More than simply learning to prepare French dishes, students experienced firsthand how cuisine reflects the French way of life.

Merci beaucoup to Chef Paul Grosz and Ryan for opening their kitchen, sharing their expertise, and generously dedicating their time to creating such a meaningful learning experience for our students.

MERCY SPEAK UP: STUDENT CONCERN & INCIDENT REPORT FORM

Please note the following email was sent to all staff and students in regard to the updated student concern and incident report form.

At Mercy, we want every student to feel safe, respected, included, and supported. That’s why we are introducing our updated Mercy Speak Up: Student Concern and Incident Report form.

If you experience or witness something that makes you or someone else feel unsafe, uncomfortable, excluded, or disrespected, we encourage you to speak up. This includes bullying, harassment, racist or discriminatory comments, body shaming, intimidation, hurtful online behavior, and other concerns.

You do not need to know exactly what to call the behavior or whether it violates a school policy. If something doesn’t feel right, that is enough reason to let us know. You can share what happened, and we will review your concern.

QR codes will be posted throughout the building, including bathrooms, hallways, classrooms, the cafeteria, the MAC, and other common areas, so you can easily access the form whenever you need it. Click here to access the Mercy Speak Up: Student Concern & Incident Report Form. The linked QR Code will also be uploaded onto your iPad.

Reports go directly to Mrs. Sattler, Mrs. Tarplin, and Mrs. T. Smith. The administrative team will keep your name confidential, and someone will follow up with you within 24–48 hours.

Speaking up is one way we care for one another and live out our Mercy values. Whether something happens to you or you witness it happening to someone else, your voice matters, and you don’t have to navigate a concern alone.

Thank you for helping us make Mercy a community where everyone belongs.

In Mercy,

Mrs. Traci Smith

Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging
