Kuya's community lounge

Kuya is a member-based community that opened its Austin location in 2021 with a mission to redefine healthcare by honoring the whole human experience. It is founded on the belief that humans aren’t meant to heal alone. The space includes a bright and welcoming community lounge featuring an adaptogenic latte bar and Kuya Coffee. This creates the perfect setting for members to relax, to work away from home, and to build relationships within a like-minded community. Kuya offers day passes starting at $65 for guests interested in select services and for visitors seeking a relaxing getaway while visiting Austin. Recurring memberships range from $190 - $349 per month and grant access to the entire facility and to other special member perks. (See here for more info on Kuya’s membership packages.) Additionally, Kuya offers a remarkably diverse range of public community events. From intimate gatherings to large-scale educational seminars, Kuya’s weekly events are designed to enrich and to inform while also creating a supportive environment for guests who are on personal healing journeys. (See here for Kuya’s monthly event calendar.) Finally, every other Wednesday at 7 p.m. Kuya invites interested patrons for an informal info session with Dr. Newsom. She covers in detail the specifics of Kuya’s Ketamine Therapy experience and explains how all of Kuya’s offerings support this unique and potentially life-altering undertaking. The next session is planned for Wednesday, April 17 and is open to the public.

“Humans are not meant to heal alone and the community at Kuya is the heartbeat of what we do,” said Megan Butler, President at Kuya. “There's a synchronicity to the way Kuya works. Who you meet in the lounge, the conversations you partake in with people in the sauna, the way visitors express more vulnerably while in a space they feel safe in — it's all a part of a natural rhythm that takes place at Kuya and it's a beautiful thing to be a part of.”

Kuya's sensory deprivation float tank

There is something for everyone at Kuya, no matter where one is on their wellness journey. Kuya’s forward-thinking approach to transformational medicine recognizes that the “whole human” consists of a suite of systems functioning together in a collective domain. We focus on three key foundational pillars that are seen as central to the healing process: Hardware, or the body’s physical and neurological systems; Software, which encompasses the psyche, mind, and emotions; and Lifeware, which focuses on facilitating positive changes in one's daily life to ensure long-term benefits. The team at Kuya sees each client as a unique human being. Each healer has a different skill set so several lenses are used to identify specific needs and to empower clients with the knowledge and spirit it takes “to transform”. Members are led through curated services to achieve healing and harmony along with an optimal sense of well-being. All this is done while fostering personal responsibility for one’s own health.

When it comes to Hardware, Kuya offers a variety of IV therapy solutions to elevate one’s immune system, physiology, and metabolism with tailored infusion blends that can include vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids and peptides. Guests can also experience contrast therapy in a cozy communal cedarwood sauna and thermoregulated cold plunges offering a transformative experience that transcends traditional relaxation techniques. Kuya also has a specialized lymph therapy suit that combines compression and heat to stimulate lymphatic flow to support detoxification and supplement immune functioning.

Falling under their Software pillar are Kuya’s soothing sensory deprivation float tanks which eliminate sensory distraction and allow clients to melt away the stresses of the day while also reflecting and fostering a deeper sense of self. Each soundproof and lightproof float tank is filled with a solution of warm water and a high concentration of Epsom salt, allowing guests to float effortlessly on the water’s surface. All floats also include a session in Kuya’s relaxing zero-gravity massage chairs. Additionally, Kuya offers meditative sessions through the use of the OPUS SoundBed. This cutting-edge vibroacoustic technology delivers low-frequency vibrations to envelop guests in soundscapes ranging from the soothing patter of rain to the intensity of thunder which facilitates the creation of vibrational waves to stimulate a state of harmony.

Ketamine therapy has become increasingly popular. This potent psychoactive medicine, when given properly, may help to rapidly cut through barriers within the psyche and to open one to deeper levels of self-understanding. Kuya offers a unique and well-orchestrated experience. Set and setting are vital components of the process and one can rest assured that each dose is appropriate, and is administered in an idyllic space. Each step of the way one’s gifted facilitator helps one to establish intentions, provides advice based on experience, offers broad-based knowledge, and structures one-on-one reflections and early integration. (See here for more on Kuya’s tailored facilitation.) All packages include unlimited access to the facility for the duration of the sessions. In this way, the entire sanctuary becomes a vessel that can contain transformation and healing.

“The poet Mary Oliver said, ‘I don't want to end up simply having visited the world,’ and that seems to aptly describe the staff and so many of the clients at Kuya,” said Medical Director Dr. Sheila Grace Newsom. “I and my professional team are dedicated to helping such people to safely dive into the Ketamine experience. With this psychedelic, we have learned much in the last several years; and, we have learned healing comes in many forms: it is a potent anti-inflammatory, helps to create new neural pathways, can augment sobriety and can foster a sense of re-connection with one’s soul. In sum: we have created a potent therapy administered by caring humans that is given in a structured and intentional way in order to improve lives. I firmly believe that we heal as we help others to heal, and that our offering here is unique in the whole world.”

Another unique service offered in Kuya’s medical program is Neurostim. This non-invasive therapy delivers low-voltage electrical impulses through the skin and scalp that can affect brain waves generated by deep brain networks. It can also augment stimulation of the vagal nerve, a central component of the parasympathetic nervous system, which regulates critical functions like mood, immune response, digestion and heart rate. It also serves as one of the major connections between the brain and gut. Neurostim can be helpful for individuals experiencing refractory depression, autism, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and even inflammatory bowel disease. Clients may use both Neurostim and Ketamine Therapy as the therapeutic effects of each augments the other and both stimulate healing and boost overall well-being.
