Government Affairs News
With the 2020 Legislative Session in full swing, the Meridian Chamber Government Affairs Committee is actively meeting with our district Idaho Legislators every other week for Coffee with the Idaho Legislators to get an inside view of the issues being worked on through the legislature. Representatives Jason Monks and Mike Moyle met with 15 Chamber members early morning on January 24th.
Discussions on legislation, including a statewide hands-free cell phone ban, funding of higher education, insurance bill requiring insurance verification, and other Idaho budget issues were very informative. Most of the conversation centered around property tax and sales tax. No less than four bills are being introduced in the House to try and address the higher property tax bills in areas that are seeing rapidly increasing home values.
HB 359, introduced by Rep. Jason Monks (R-Nampa), takes a radical approach of eliminating property taxes altogether and offsetting them by raising the sales tax to 11% and directing the additional revenue to local governments.
For more information on Idaho's higher education issues, join the Meridian Chamber Speaker Luncheon on February 4th which will feature ISU President Satterlee, and the Meridian Chamber Economic Excellence Luncheon on March 12th featuring BSU's President Tromp.
