On March 20, 2020, the doors to Uganda closed! President Museveni, in an effort to control the outbreak of CoVid-19, closed all schools and businesses, stopped all public transportation (busses, taxis, boda-bodas, personal automobiles) and closed the airport to travelers. And, since 95% of the homes do not have electricity, distance learning and work-at-home were not options. As a result, the economy (and education) has suffered.
However, there is hope. Schools will re-open January 3rd and will resume either their normal three terms (83 days each) from January to November or some have proposed four shorter terms of 10 weeks each. In either case the curriculum has been streamlined to provide the children with two years of learning allowing them to get “back on track” by the end of 2023 (two years of study in 2022 and two years in 2023). Our children are so bright and eager to learn they will easily handle this increased learning load. Now, that’s the good news. And, even more good news is that most of our teachers and students will be returning! Many schools closed and/or lost teachers and students but we have not suffered from those losses.
On the other side (less than good news) without anyone on campus for almost two years, our buildings are suffering from disrepair including cracks, mold, water damage and general disrepair. Here are two video clips to demonstrate what needs to be done.
