As Christmas approaches, the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation reflects on the powerful message of love, compassion, and hope that this holy season brings. In the spirit of Christ’s birth, the Foundation is reminded of His call to care for the most vulnerable among us—the poor, the sick, the marginalized, and those most in need of care and support.

Just as Jesus entered the world as a vulnerable child in humble circumstances, He calls all of us to extend His love to those who are suffering—whether through providing health care, sharing a nutritious meal, or walking alongside those in need. From the moment refugees arrive in the United States, they’re working against a clock. Government aid only lasts so long. Within a year of settling in a new country with unfamiliar practices and a foreign language, refugees may be on their own, as they are no longer eligible for the same support and resources they may have received upon arrival.

St. Joe Foundation awards $2,652,998 to local agencies serving vulnerable individuals in Allen County, IN

The St. Joseph Community Health Foundation invested $2,652,998 to 71 Allen County, Indiana organizations serving low-income and vulnerable residents in 2024.

The Board of Directors recently approved the latest round of grants, bringing the total number of grants awarded in 2024 to 94. Since the St. Joe Foundation was established in 1998, it has awarded over $28 million through 1,924 grants to approximately 290 local organizations.

The St. Joe Foundation is inspired by the legacy of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, who opened Fort Wayne’s first hospital in 1869 to ensure everyone in the community could receive quality healthcare. The Foundation continues this tradition by investing in programming that improves the health and well-being of the area's most vulnerable residents in four impact areas: refugees and immigrants, food insecurity and nutrition, prenatal and infant care, and access to health and wellness.

As another successful year of the Prenatal and Infant Care Luncheon series wraps up, the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation reflects on the incredible opportunities these events have provided for networking, learning, and collaboration among maternal and child health professionals. The final luncheon of the year focused on the critical issue of “Connecting Pregnant Women and Their Infants with Affordable Food and Nutrition,” bringing together experts and community members to address key health concerns.
