Challenge Campaign

For many of our neighbors in need, 2018 has been a year of uncertainty and anxiety concerning their ability to pay for food, rent, child care, gas and electric, furniture, or medicine. Yet, for over fifty years, these neighbors in the Annandale, Bailey's Crossroads, and Lincolnia areas of Fairfax County have been able to turn to Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) for help.

ACCA needs your support to continue our work in the coming year. Our goal for this year's Challenge Campaign is to raise $130,000 in donations between now and January 31, 2019.

How do you know that donations will directly help needy neighbors?    The Greater Washington Catalogue for Philanthropy  has included ACCA in its group of "the best" local charities for the past several years.  Experts from the catalogue vet charities by asking questions such as:   What need is a nonprofit meeting? Is it doing so with excellence? Are its finances sound? What impact, concretely measurable or harder to measure, is it having on the community it serves? This is how the catalogue determines which nonprofits are truly among "the best", helping donors feel confident that their giving makes an impact.

To donate by mail, send your check payable to ACCA to 7200 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003. Please note "Challenge Campaign" in the memo line. You can donate with credit or debit card online via the Catalogue for Philanthropy or PayPal. See details on the  ACCA website.

Thank you for supporting ACCA to help those in need in our community. Your contribution WILL make a difference!
Support the Homeless this Winter

Bailey's Crossroads Community Shelter's Hypothermia Prevention Program is in operation every day through March 31.  Through  partnerships with volunteers, churches, non-profit organizations, and individuals, hot meals, breakfast items, beverages, and snacks are provided to our neighbors.   Meals , such as one-dish casseroles, soups, salad, entrees, vegetables, bread/rolls, and dessert are needed for several dates this winter.

For more information or to volunteer,   contact Sherry Edelkamp  , hypothermia coordinator
at  BaileysHypoShelter@gmail.com .    Clothing  , such as hats, gloves, adult size (new) thermal underwear (L, XL, XXL), coats, scarves, and gloves are needed.  For more information,   contact Khristina Koontz  at   kkoontz@newhopehousing.org.  If you see someone at risk, call 911.  More information about Fairfax County's program is available.
Good Neighbor Program

The Good Neighbor Program initiative that ACCA is supporting in collaboration with Lutheran Social Services will begin in January with bimonthly homework clubs at Peace Lutheran Church. To help us in this project, please share the following needs with your congregations, friends, and family.

1) Dental care. Many refugees come to the United States in dire need of good dentistry beyond the cleanings and screenings that Medicaid covers. If you are a dentist or know one who would be willing to be part of a growing network of dentists that offer free or low-fee dental work for refugees, please consider offering your services to recently-arrived families in need.
2) Child safety seats: We are providing transportation for families and are collecting new/gently used child safety seats for infants - age 7.
3) Sewing machines: please consider gifting new and/or used (working!) sewing machines to a women's group that will begin classes at Peace Lutheran also in January. Also, if you are interested in volunteering to help women with sewing and ESL, please consider being part of the project.

If you are able to help, please contact Nadia Fitzcharles ( nadia@sharingpeace.org).

CROP Hunger Walk

The 2018 Annandale CROP Hunger Walk was held on  Saturday, October 20 at Lake Accotink Park. This walk raises funds for Church World Service's (CWS)  hunger and refugee relief and for ACCA.

Volunteers from 12 ACCA churches participated and 40 youth contributed posters to the event.

To date, we have sent $16,054 in collected funds to Church World Service, and $1890 in online gifts have been made; an additional $265 has been turned in but not sent to CWS-for a grand total to date of $18,208.  The fundraiser who collected the most donations for the 2018 Annandale walk is Sally Norris of United Baptist Church.  Sally raised a total of $7183 this year, the most she has raised in any single year.

Online donations can still be made at http://www.crophungerwalk.org/annandaleva .

Shepherd's Center News

The Shepherd's Center of Annandale Springfield (SCAS), a nonprofit focused on seniors helping seniors, needs volunteers and a part time Office Director.

The Office Director position is a paid position earning $12 - $15 per hour based on experience. Experience in event planning, newsletter writing, and supervising volunteers required.

Volunteers are needed to help with many programs. We could use drivers, grant writers, community outreach, marketing help, event planning, and Board members.

We always have a need for drivers for the SCAS/ACCA Transportation program to take area adults 50+ to medical, dental, and physical therapy facilities during the week and shopping and banking on the weekends.
