...And a very Happy New Year!
Christmas Card Donations
Each year, the Leadership of the Franciscan SIsters of Allegany chooses four charities to receive donations in the names of Sisters, Associates, partners in ministry, and friends of the congregation. The names of those organizations are provided in each Christmas card that is sent out in mid-December. This year's recipients were:

Genesis House Women and Families Shelter, Olean, NY - The Genesis House of Olean has served women and families in need since its creation in the early 1990s. Earlier this year the Olean Zoning Board of Appeals gave its permission for the Genesis House to utilize the former convent at St. John's Church as a second location, in addition to their primary facility on Barry Street.

St. Joseph's Infant School Parenting Programme, Kingston, Jamaica - St. Joseph's Infant School, established by the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, celebrated its 125th anniversary this year. Its students are primarily from the inner-city of Kingston and the school becomes a home for students and parents alike. St. Joseph's staff not only teach the children in their care, but also work with parents who might be overwhelmed by, or unprepared for, for the many challenges of parenting.

Santa Casa de Misericordia de Anapolis - Anapolis, Brazil - Founded by the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, this hospital brings healing and compassion to the poor and under-served residents of Anapolis, Brazil.

Radio Maria - La Paz, Bolivia - Radio Maria is a Catholic radio station in Bolivia. This donation will help the all-volunteer station renew its operating license so it can continue its mission of New Evangelization.
Motherhouse Quilt Raffle

Sr. Harriet Hamilton OSF, who lives in Cortland, NY, made a magnificent quilt (pictured at left) for the Sisters in the Motherhouse to raffle. December 15, was the last day to take a chance and the raffle drawing took place at the Annual Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 15. Sr. Eleanor Berret from the Ritiro was the winner.

Congratulations, Eleanor, and thank you, Harriet! The raffle tickets earned $377 that will be added to the Franciscan Crafters account to be disseminated at the end of December to a worthy cause within the Southern Tier.
Nine Lessons and Carols, Light Up the Night, Bring Holidays to Life
From STAT News, St. Anthony Hospital, St. Petersburg, FL
The holiday season moved into high gear on December 5 during the annual Nine Lessons and Carols and Light Up the Night Celebration. Nine Lessons and Carols tells the story of God creating the earth, the prophets foretelling of a Messiah, and the birth of Jesus through nine scripture readings and nine choral works, performed by the St. Anthony’s Hospital Choir under the direction of Fr. John Mullet, Spiritual Care Director.

Following the chapel service, everyone walked to the main lobby where Sr. Mary McNally, Vice President of Mission, told the story of St. Francis and the Crèche. Fr. Albert Shuyaka, Spiritual Care, blessed the Crèche.

After the blessing, everyone went to the top level of the Jackson Street Garage to watch the lighting of the St. Anthony’s Christmas tree. Mary Ann Aselage, a great friend of St. Anthony’s and the Foundation, flipped the switch to light the Christmas tree. She also was one of the original ten members of the Foundation’s Women in Philanthropy group, which started in 2007.
Franciscan Federation Conference
Friday, June 5 – Monday, June 8, 2020
DoubleTree by Hilton Denver
3203 Quebec Street, Denver CO 80207
This 2020 Invitational Federation Assembly seeks to answer the following:
  • How can more strategic collaboration strengthen the Franciscan voice as we respond to needs in both our nation and our church in this time of crisis?
  • How can leaders of major Franciscan organizations collectively plan for a sustainable future for many Franciscan sponsored initiatives and programs?
  • How will changing demographics and organizational structures of both the friars and many sisters’ congregations impact membership and the work of national Franciscan organizations?
The Denver Assembly Planning Group, includes the Executive Committee of the Commission of Charism Services, a few National Board Members, our Co-Executive Directors, and representatives of Franciscan Action Network, Secular Franciscans, Franciscan Mentors, Association of Franciscan Colleges and Universities, is pleased to announce the keynote presenters:
