A Christmas Day video message to the diocese from Bishop Nick will be shared on our website and social media platforms, talking about the utter strangeness of God among us. It includes prayers for the dispossessed, those forced to migrate and those who live in destitution through no fault of their own. Watch it here on the diocesan YouTube Channel on Christmas Day.
Christmas and cricket came together at Headingley, Leeds when the Yorkshire County Cricket Club hosted its first ever Christmas Celebration with carols ringing out in the Howard Stand Concourse. Club Chaplain, Bishop Chris Edmondson, who is one of our diocesan Honorary Assistant Bishops, helped organise the event. Find out more here
With a combined age of over 500, “are we the oldest nativity in Barnsley, or maybe even the whole Diocese of Leeds?” asks the Revd Phil Maries. Revd Phil is Associate Priest in the Central Barnsley benefice, and has been involved in an interactive nativity pageant for local schoolchildren with members from St Edward’s Barnsley. The company of HMS Ceres RN, located at Carlton Barracks held their annual carol service at All Souls (Hook Memorial) Church, Little London, Leeds on Thursday, December 15. The company and the guest choir from St Michael’s Headingley were welcomed by the Revd Lynne Grey on behalf of churchwardens and congregation of All Souls. Find out more here
BBC’s The One Show has featured ordinand Lizzy Brothwood from our diocese in a special report on 30 years of women priests. Lizzy, who previously attended St Matthias in Burley, Leeds, began ordination training at Trinity College Bristol in 2021 and is on track to be ordained Deacon in 2024, as is her husband Matt. A moving exhibition on the theme of Coming Home for Christmas has been attracting visitors to one of our Huddersfield churches. Hepworth Church, in the Upper Holme Valley Team near Holmfirth, hosts a Christmas exhibition every year where local people, schools, church groups and community organisations respond creatively to a different theme. Find out more here
The Diocese of Leeds Sudan Link Group are looking for volunteers for their next trip to Sudan in February 2023. Fiona Beevers, Co-Chair of the Group, is encouraging people to get involved with joining with our sisters and brothers in Sudan, seeing how our support helps Christians in the country. Wakefield Street Angels are looking for new volunteers to help keep people in Wakefield safe in the evenings. The Street Angels are looking for people 21 years old or older, who can be free for a few hours on Friday or Saturday nights, and are caring, confident and enjoy helping others. Find out more here
More than 400 pupils from nine schools went to Ripon Cathedral to see their ‘Threads through Creation’ exhibition this autumn. Textile artist Jacqui Parkinson spent nearly three years making ‘Threads through Creation’, a series of 12 silk panels telling the story of creation. Find out more here
Flower seeds, bulbs and gardening equipment have been helping young people connect with nature, thanks to donations to a local children’s organisation by members of St Stephen’s with Eastburn in Steeton, Keighley. The Church has recently received a Bronze Eco Church Award for its environmental work. Find out more here

A new online self-paced course for people who are learning to live with dementia, for those sharing the journey with them, and for church communities looking to provide appropriate care and support. More information and immediate self-enrolment is available here.

This is the only opportunity in 2023 to take the Introduction to Theology Course. This is an opportunity to reflect on the Christian faith and to deepen your own personal journey. Please note that this course is a pre-requisite for those wishing to undertake Licenced Lay Ministry training with our diocese. Find out more here

The course is open to anyone who has a heart for caring for people. This is your last chance to take this course prior to next year’s Lay Pastoral Minister applications closing. It is a great course for a whole prayer ministry or visiting team to attend together. Find out more here

A course designed to help Christians feel more confident about sharing their own personal faith story without feeling uncertain about what they believe, or anxious about difficult questions. A great way to get your church talking about their faith. This course is open to clergy and laity. Find out more here

A Diocesan Lay Pathway for lay people who are unable to commit to becoming Licensed Lay Ministers but still feel called to a preaching ministry on an occasional basis. Please note that applications for this course must be received by 12 noon on Wednesday, December 21. Find out more here

This new enquirers’ course is open to anyone who seeks a deeper engagement with the person of Christ. This course is a new model of relational and experiential Enquirer’s Course by Sam Wells. Find out more here

A day course at the Trinity Centre in Bingley to explore how to make our churches more inclusive to members of all communities. This course is open to both clergy and laity. Find out more here

An opportunity for children to experience the Christmas story for themselves by taking part in it. Children are encouraged to come dressed up as their favourite nativity character and they will be invited to take part as the story unfolds through readings. Join the Church Urban Fund to learn how to create churches where stigma is tackled, appropriate support is available, and participation is at the heart. Corin Pilling of Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries and members of the Together Network will help to explore how faith offers an opportunity for building a community of mutual support and participation. Candles in the Dark
Sunday, February 5 at 6pm
A celebration of worship, inspiration and encouragement at Bradford Cathedral. An evening for anyone who wants to see their church growing. It will be organised by the diocesan Leading your Church into Growth team and will feature guest speaker, Sophie Jelley, the Bishop of Doncaster.

In response to the cost of living crisis, churches across our diocese have begun to open their doors to the public as Warm Spaces. One of those churches is St Paul’s Ireland Wood who have set up a weekly space on a Monday teatime called Warm Welcome. Watch the video here
Halifax Minster's annual Christmas Tree Festival took place for the first weekend of December. The Minster is filled with over 30 trees, sponsored and decorated by families and organisations from across the town. Watch the video here
