May 2019
Greetings!

Exciting news! Precinct 4 residents will have a new community center in 2021. The newly named George H.W. Bush Community Center stands next to the Barbara Bush Branch Library in the Cypress Creek Cultural District, just as the late president and first lady stood side-by-side for 73 years. The property, formerly part of Cypress Creek Christian Church, will serve youth, families, senior adults, civic organizations, and other groups. What better way to recognize our former president and first lady! I encourage you to learn more about our new community center in the article below.

As summer approaches, we have more events coming your way. Precinct 4’s Heritage Festival features historical games and activities, a Civil War battle re-enactment, and archaeological digs. I also join Congressman Ted Poe in May for the fifth annual Police Memorial honoring Texas law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. I hope to see you there! You can read more about these events in this edition of Commissioner’s E-Corner .

As a reminder, you can access past issues of  Commissioner's E-Corner on the  Precinct 4 website. Visit Precinct 4 online to learn more about our road projects and upcoming events available through our community centers, parks department, and Senior Adult Program.

New Community Center Planned for Cypress Creek Cultural District

More services are on the way for north Harris County residents, thanks to a new Precinct 4 community center opening in 2021. The 24,500-square-foot facility named for President George H.W. Bush is near the Barbara Bush Branch Library and Precinct 4’s Collins Park, all in the Cypress Creek Cultural District.

“We chose the property for a variety of reasons,” said Commissioner R. Jack Cagle. “The community center stands in a densely populated area near Precinct 4’s Collins and Meyers parks. The facility’s large size ensures we can accommodate Precinct 4’s growing population.”

Mangum-Howell Center is currently Precinct 4’s only dedicated community center, serving nearly 1.4 million residents.

Precinct 4's Community Assistance Department Prepares for Hurricane Season

As hurricane season approaches, Harris County Precinct 4 reminds residents that its Community Assistance Department (CAD) will be available by phone 24 hours per day during natural disasters and other emergencies.

Before a disaster even strikes, CAD staff participate in training and receive equipment allowing them to operate from any location and stay active during power outages.

“Our Community Assistance Department can work from anywhere,” said Commissioner R. Jack Cagle. “Even during floods or power outages, staff can connect community members to important resources and answer constituent calls for service.”

Barbara Bush Library Receives Area's First Family Place

Children and toddlers can now enjoy more programs and activities than ever at Barbara Bush Branch Library.

Thanks to the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, the Harris County Public Library opened the first Houston-area George & Barbara Bush Family Place at the Barbara Bush Branch Library in March. The area is the first of eight spaces dedicated to learning through play in the Houston area.

The Foundation announced the $200,000 donation to the Harris County Public Library last summer in tribute to former First Lady Barbara Bush.

The funds were earmarked to transform areas within eight county libraries into early childhood spaces to stimulate learning and play based on the Family Place Libraries national model.

Greater Service Through Collaboration

When it comes to improving safety and mobility, Precinct 4’s Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) Division strives to go beyond the call of duty.

The CIP program focuses on road construction, road expansion projects, (including drainage mitigation, traffic signals and intersection improvements), school zone flashing warning signals, and sidewalks throughout Precinct 4.

“Serving constituents is Precinct 4’s purpose - serving them well is our No. 1 goal,” says Lindsey Trahan, agency coordinator for Precinct 4’s CIP Division.
