"Embracing Diversity, Giving, and Gratitude During the Holidays"

Mayor MappIG.jpg

Dear Jazz,

This time of year is very special, and it gives me a great deal of pleasure to use this medium to address our beloved community as we usher in the holiday season, a time imbued with joy, reflection, and anticipation. In Plainfield, the holiday spirit is amplified by our community's incredible cultural diversity. This diversity is not just a feature of our city; it is the very heart of it, pulsating with the rhythms of different cultures and traditions. As the holidays approach, this tapestry of diversity becomes even more vivid, reminding us of the rich cultural heritage that we all share.

The holiday season in Plainfield is a beautiful showcase of how our diversity shapes and enriches our lives. From the Diwali lights that symbolize the victory of light over darkness to the menorah candles of Hanukkah that speak of resilience and faith, from the Christmas trees twinkling in windows to the Kwanzaa kinara that represents the African roots of many Americans, each tradition tells a story. These stories are threads in the larger narrative of our community, a narrative that speaks of unity in diversity.

This season is also a poignant reminder of the importance of giving and gratitude. In Plainfield, we take these values to heart. The holiday season is an opportunity to show kindness and generosity, not only to our loved ones but also to those who might be less fortunate. Whether it's through volunteering at a local shelter, donating to a food bank, or simply extending a helping hand to a neighbor, every act of giving adds to the collective spirit of our city. It reinforces the bonds that tie us together as a community.

Moreover, maintaining a spirit of gratitude is equally important. In the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, it's easy to lose sight of the things that truly matter. This season, I encourage each of you to take a moment to reflect on the blessings in your lives. Be it family, friends, health, or simply the joy of being part of such a diverse and vibrant community, there's so much to be thankful for. Gratitude has the power to transform our perspective, to turn what we have into enough, and more.

As your Mayor, I am immensely proud of the way our community comes together, particularly during the holiday season. Let's embrace the cultural richness that each of us brings to the table. Let's commit to acts of giving and hold a space for gratitude in our hearts. Together, we can ensure that this holiday season in Plainfield is not only a time of celebration but also a time of unity, compassion, and shared joy. Let's make these holidays a true reflection of the spirit of our community—diverse, generous, and grateful.

"Abrazar La Diversidad, El Don y La Gratitud Durante Las Fiestas"

Querido(a) Jazz,

Governor Murphy Directs New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to Accelerate New Offshore Wind Solicitation

- November 29, 2023

TRENTON, NJ Governor Phil Murphy today directed the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) to launch New Jersey’s fourth offshore wind solicitation in early 2024. The Governor’s action reaffirms the State’s commitment to achieving a 100% clean energy economy by 2035 and underscores the strength and promise of New Jersey’s clean energy economy, including the critical importance of the state’s supply chain facilities to the regional offshore wind industry.

“I have directed the BPU to take this action in recognition of the strong future of New Jersey’s offshore wind industry,” said Governor Murphy. “New Jersey can – and will – continue to remain a burgeoning offshore wind development hub that attracts new projects and their accompanying economic and environmental benefits for generations to come. These new projects, along with the Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind project awarded in 2021, will support tens of thousands of good-paying, family-sustaining jobs for New Jerseyans while protecting the quality of the air our children breathe and making good on the promise of affordable clean energy produced right here in the Garden State.”

“Today’s announcement affirms New Jersey’s commitment to offshore wind and to meeting Governor Murphy’s clean energy goals,” said NJBPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy. “Offshore wind is vital to our clean energy economy and our efforts to mitigate climate change, and we are resolute in our efforts to ensure New Jersey realizes its benefits."

New Jersey’s fourth solicitation project awards are expected in early 2025.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces New Action to Protect Communities from Lead Exposure

Building on the Biden-Harris Administration’s Historic Commitment to Protect Children and Families from Lead Poisoning, EPA Proposes Rule to Remove Lead Pipes Across the United States.

November 30, 2023 - The Biden-Harris Administration is working to ensure a future where every child and family can live safely in their communities without the fear and harmful effects of lead exposure.

Today, as part of President Biden and Vice President Harris’s vision for a lead-free future, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a proposal to strengthen its Lead and Copper Rule that would require water systems to replace lead service lines within 10 years, helping secure safe drinking water for communities across the country.

The President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests over $50 billion for the largest upgrade to the nation’s water infrastructure in history, and today’s action builds on these historic levels of funding from President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, a key pillar of Bidenomics, to replace lead service lines across the nation.

More than 9.2 million American households connect to water through lead pipes and lead service lines. Due to decades of inequitable infrastructure development and underinvestment, lead exposure disproportionately affects low-income communities and communities of color. There is no safe level of exposure to lead, particularly for children, and eliminating lead exposure from the air, water, and homes is a crucial component of the Biden-Harris Administration’s historic commitment to advancing environmental justice.

In addition to taking action towards achieving 100 percent replacement of lead service lines, EPA’s proposed Lead and Copper Rule Improvements increase tap water sampling requirements, require water systems to complete comprehensive and publicly available lead service line inventories, and strengthen and streamline requirements for water systems to take additional actions to reduce lead health risks to communities. This proposal advances the Biden-Harris Administration’s Lead Pipe and Paint Action Plan, a whole-of-government approach to reduce all sources of lead exposure.
