"Your Voice Can Change Everything - Register to Vote"
|
Dear Community Member,
As the leaves begin to change and the new season emerges, there is one crucial date I want you to keep in mind: October 15th, the voter registration deadline for New Jersey. During a time when it may appear that local voices are often marginalized, it's easy to think, "Why should I care about voting?" The truth is, whether it's education, healthcare, the environment, or the economy, the decisions made by elected officials impact every aspect of our city and our community. By extension, your vote can significantly shape the quality of life for you and your loved ones.
According to a 2022 report from NJ.gov, only 30% of Plainfield’s registered voters participated in the general election. I view this statistic as a challenge and a call to action for every eligible resident to stand up and be counted. You may feel it’s impossible to make a difference, but your vote could actually be the tipping point in one of the most important national elections in U.S. history. When we stand together at the polls, we amplify our voices, fortify our advocacy, and create opportunities to define our future while solidifying the legacy of our children.
We must NEVER forget that the right to vote was hard-won by those who came before us. They faced mountains of obstacles, endured persecution and degradation, while sacrificing life and dignity to ensure that everyone had a voice and the power to influence our government's direction. Even now, forces are working to diminish our voice and erase that history - but we hold the power to prevent those efforts. Your vote is a voice for progress, a voice for change, a voice for equality and liberty, and most importantly, a voice for hope.
As your Mayor, I encourage every Plainfield resident to participate not only by voting but by taking action that endures beyond election season. When we attend council meetings, participate in town halls, and volunteer within our community, we seize the power of our democracy and begin to see each other on a deeper level. Our participation can create a united front that fortifies our Queen City beyond the election.
I encourage local organizations, schools, and community leaders to organize voter registration drives and host educational workshops that empower residents to make informed decisions.
For those seeking guidance, the state's official website, NJ.gov, offers comprehensive information on how to register, where to vote, and what to expect on Election Day. Sharing this information with friends, family, and neighbors not only strengthens our community's readiness but also inspires each other to participate fully in our nation’s democratic process. As a community, we must embrace a long-term vision to improve the quality of life for everyone and ensure our democracy embodies the will of all the people.
As the voter registration deadline approaches, consider what is at stake and the impact you can make. Don't let this opportunity pass you by—register to vote by October 15th to make sure your voice is heard this Election Day. Together, we can elect leaders committed to building a future that mirrors the ideals and aspirations we hold dear. Together, we can ensure that every voice is heard, that every person is counted and that the needs of every Plainfield resident are addressed. Vote to build the country, the state, the city, and the community you want to live in.

"Tu Voz Puede Cambiarlo Todo: Regístrate Para Votar"
|
Querido(a) Community Member,

Governor Murphy Announces $15 Million FEMA Award to Increase Climate Change Resiliency
|
September 27, 2024
TRENTON – To conclude Climate Week, Governor Phil Murphy today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) selected New Jersey's application, awarding $15 million in funding to increase climate change preparedness and provide immediate relief to homeowners in the aftermath of a storm. New Jersey will provide a 10% match, about $1.5 million, as part of the award.
The selection, through FEMA’s Safeguarding Tomorrow Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) program, will allow New Jersey to make low-interest loans to local governments most in need of financial assistance, including low-income areas and underserved communities, for their hazard mitigation and resilience infrastructure needs.
“This award is essential to ensuring that our local communities have the tools they need to get ahead of the next disaster,” said Governor Murphy. “As our state experiences the growing intensity of storms and sea-level rise due to climate change, this program will allow us to increase available resources so we can provide prompt assistance to New Jerseyans. I’m grateful to the Biden-Harris Administration and New Jersey's congressional delegation for fully funding the STORM Act as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.”
The Safeguarding Tomorrow through Ongoing Risk Mitigation (STORM) Act established the STORM Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) to provide revolving loan funds to states, eligible federally recognized tribes, territories, and Washington, D.C. to finance projects that reduce risks from natural hazards and disasters.
Through the STORM RLF program, FEMA empowers these entities to make funding decisions and award loans directly. These revolving loan funds will help local governments carry out hazard mitigation projects that reduce disaster risks for communities, homeowners, businesses, and nonprofit organizations to build climate resilience.
“As we highlight Climate Week, it is important for us to address the ever-expanding impacts that climate change has on the communities we serve. Increased severe weather activity not just threatens an increase in costs-- it threatens lives,” said FEMA Region 2 Administrator David Warrington. “At FEMA, we take climate change seriously and understand that funding opportunities of this type are critical to building resilience against the damaging effects that can occur throughout the region. We remain committed to putting people first and value our partnership with New Jersey to help communities build capacity for years to come.”
“The new STORM RLF financing program highlights the significance our federal and State officials have placed on climate mitigation infrastructure projects in our neediest communities,” said Robert Briant, Jr., Chairperson of the I-Bank. “Working with FEMA, New Jersey now has one more tool to help these communities protect their residents and assets before the next disaster strikes.”
“This is a significant award for the state and provides an additional path to assist local governments and underserved communities,” said Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police and State Director of Emergency Management. “As New Jersey continues to experience stronger storms, this resource allows us to offer yet another method to carry out mitigation projects and make our state even more resilient.”
This second year of STORM Act funding to New Jersey represents the second highest cumulative award in the nation to date.
The funding was made possible by a partnership between the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank (I-Bank) and the New Jersey State Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM), within the Division of State Police, to apply for and administer funds to finance hazard mitigation projects in New Jersey through the New Jersey Community Hazard Assistance Mitigation Program (NJ CHAMP). Please contact the I-Bank at information@njib.gov for additional information.

Statement from President Joe Biden on the Negotiations Between USMX and the International Longshoremen's Association
|
October 01, 2024
Collective bargaining is the best way for workers to get the pay and benefits they deserve. I have urged USMX, which represents a group of foreign-owned carriers, to come to the table and present a fair offer to the workers of the International Longshoremen’s Association that ensures they are paid appropriately in line with their invaluable contributions. Ocean carriers have made record profits since the pandemic and in some cases profits grew in excess of 800 percent compared to their profits prior to the pandemic. Executive compensation has grown in line with those profits and profits have been returned to shareholders at record rates. It’s only fair that workers, who put themselves at risk during the pandemic to keep ports open, see a meaningful increase in their wages as well.
As our nation climbs out of the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, dockworkers will play an essential role in getting communities the resources they need. Now is not the time for ocean carriers to refuse to negotiate a fair wage for these essential workers while raking in record profits. My Administration will be monitoring for any price gouging activity that benefits foreign ocean carriers, including those on the USMX board.
It is time for USMX to negotiate a fair contract with the longshoremen that reflects the substantial contribution they’ve been making to our economic comeback.
