SOL Innovation Committee
Immediate Past President Dr. Brian Matney (principal, Virginia Beach Division) will continue to represent VASSP on the SOL Innovation Committee. As you know, the Innovation Committee has been taking a comprehensive look at Virginia's Standards of Learning system. Preliminary recommendations have been made to the Board of Education and additional recommendations will go before the 2016 General Assembly on ways to further reform SOL assessments, student growth measures, and encourage innovative teaching in the classroom.
Dear Administrator:

On July 1st, I had the high honor of becoming president of VASSP. I am excited to hold the office and work with a dedicated board of directors as we advocate to improve public school education, strengthen the leadership role of the principal and assistant principal, and increase our opportunities to build statewide collaborations with teachers, superintendents, school boards, and parents across Virginia.

On August 3rd, I represented VASSP at a meeting with Governor McAuliffe to discuss the Virginia Public Education Coalition's budget priorities.  In an effort to have a smaller group meet with the Governor, the meeting was limited to representatives from principals, teachers, superintendents and school boards.

Now more than ever, we need VASSP and each other. There are over 2,400 middle level and high school administrators in the Commonwealth working in an environment that was unimaginable to all of us during the last ten years. The high level of scrutiny under which we and our schools operate, the litigious nature of our society, and the increased accountability for every aspect of schooling is the reality we face every day in our work. Unified with NASSP, VASSP is our professional organization. Besides legislative updates, legal updates and support, VASSP works hard to help us in our jobs by providing outstanding professional conferences and support, as well as an abundance of resources, and excellent legislative work.

Your state and national professional associations deal with numerous issues that not only directly affect how we do our jobs, but the future direction of state supported public school education. We need to be unified within our profession to deliver a clear and powerful message to members of the Virginia Board of Education, the Virginia General Assembly, and the 134 local education boards throughout the Commonwealth. If you are not already a member, you can conveniently join online by visiting the VASSP website at www.vassp.org; click on "Membership" and then click on "Join/Renew".

I look forward to my year as president and working with the VASSP board and you.  If I can ever be of assistance to you, please contact me through the VASSP state office, 1.800.249.8001, or send me a personal email at evbrent@fcps.edu.

Best wishes for a great school year!

Sincerely,

Eric V. Brent
