Message from President Wagner

Dear College of Science and Engineering,

I wanted to give you an update regarding the search process and timeline for identifying a new permanent dean for the College of Science and Engineering. First of all, I would like to thank Dr. Lyle Castle for his service as interim dean. Dr. Castle’s leadership has been an important, stabilizing force during a pivotal time for ISU and the college. His efforts are most appreciated. We are nearing the completion of the timeline for his interim service.

Typically, the hiring of a new dean would be led by the Office of the Provost. However, as you are aware, ISU currently has interim leadership in the provost position with Dr. Adam Bradford. Given the traditional search timeline, ISU will likely not have a permanent provost in place until the summer of 2025 at the earliest (we will be announcing the search for ISU’s next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in the near future). It is evident to me that permanent leadership in the College of Science and Engineering is needed to ensure we can efficiently move forward to meet the mission of the college. Therefore, I am launching the search for a new dean for the College of Science and Engineering this spring.

I have asked Dr. Martin Blair, Vice President for Research and Economic Development, and Dr. Andy Holland, Professor - Chemistry, to co-chair the nationwide search, working with a representative college search committee and an outside search firm, to identify the next dean for the college. I invite all members of the college to participate in the process. Before the conclusion of the spring 2024 semester, Dr. Blair and Dr. Holland will begin engaging with the college and the community to gather feedback and conduct listening sessions. Your feedback and insight are critical to building an accurate job description and, ultimately, ensuring a successful outcome. Of course, members of the college will also be heavily involved throughout the different stages of the search, including candidate visits and interviews. We hope to have a leader named before the end of the spring 2025 semester. After a full vetting and engaging search process, I will take recommendations from the college, Academic Affairs, community and search committee to make the final hiring decision.

I am excited to move forward with this search and am confident that we will recruit a talented pool of candidates to Idaho State University. As we move forward, the search co-chairs will be in touch with more detailed information. Thank you for your participation. I am excited about the future of the College of Science and Engineering!

President Robert W. Wagner, Ph.D.
