Message from St. Thomas the Apostle
To our parish family,

We have several updates below, including today's mass, STA's open hours for prayer and guidelines for our re-opening for weekday mass. We begin this week's newsletter with a message from STA's Fr. Richard Okiria :

Dear St. Thomas the Apostle family,

Let me begin by thanking God for protecting all of us and our loved ones from the pandemic.Though we have been out of sight, I have no doubt we kept one another in heart and prayer.

I wish to thank our Pastor Fr. Moran, Deacon Jim, the Parish Staff and the Pastoral Team for ministering to us through the internet. I am carrying out my ministry to the prison system as a Catholic Chaplain, and because we fall under the category of "essential workers", we have continued reporting to our work-stations. It is a position that comes with many risks, but I feel blessed to be able to minister to our brothers in jail.

The Pastoral Team has asked if I could include my voice regarding the events that have consumed the minds and hearts of so many not only in this country but around the world. As I reflected on whether I should really make a statement and what it would be, many wise words from the past came to mind:

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” - Edmund Burke;

"The World suffers a lot not because of the violence of the bad people, but because of the silence of the good people."
- Unknown;

"Our Lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
- Martin Luther King Junior

Some events compel us to speak out! The murder of George Floyd in broad daylight and before cameras was such an event, and it is heartening to see so many people speak out either by participating in rallies or marches, or by just calling the act out for what it was, “inhumane and evil”. A number from our own faith community participated in a public statement in West Hartford. Well-meaning statements and public marches give us all hope in humanity.

St. Thomas the Apostle Church has been at the forefront of spreading the gospel of social justice, inclusion and compassion. Dating back to the time of our former Pastor, Fr. Arthur Murphy, St. Thomas has been a home and a community that embraces all and is open to all without prejudice regarding race or other identity markers. Our motto speaks to that.

Through our programs as a community, and above all, through the extraordinary generosity of individuals I have come to know and love, St. Thomas the Apostle Church has lived out what I wish could be a model to how communities should relate.

It seems to me that the current events, rather than force us to recoil to the safety of our nests and those who look like us, challenge us, as Christians especially, to reach out and explore and relate to those who are different from us in skin color. The Gospel and the times desperately call on us to announce the message of our common humanity and the value of all human life.

Let us have the courage to show the world what is best about St Thomas as we reach out to our African American brothers in solidarity and demonstrate our solidarity with them in their common pain.

I conclude by praying for healing and reconciliation and a spirit of courage as we address racism, what has come to be called the American original sin, in our community and in our hearts.

  • Bring your own hand sanitizer to use before receiving Holy Communion.

MASS ARRIVAL PROCEDURES
  • Bring your own face mask. Face masks should be worn as soon as you exit your vehicle. Face masks are required for Mass attendance and must be worn at all times while in church, and while entering and exiting the church except for when special rules apply for receiving Holy Communion (see below).
  • The church will be open at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the 12:10 Mass. You must enter the church from the Farmington Avenue entrance only. If you need to use the elevator to enter or exit please only use it if you are alone or with other family members.
  • The church will be seated to fill the open pews from front to back.
  • Some pews have been taped closed to ensure social distancing between pews. You may be sharing a pew with another household, but social distance is required between the households (6 feet). Families and those sheltering together may sit closer than 6 feet and should exercise care that they keep a 6-foot separation from other families or individuals in the same pew.
  • Missalettes and Hymnals have been removed from the Church. If people print and bring anything to Church, they are also responsible for bringing them home with them after Mass. There will be no seating in the choir loft, or Church foyer.

MASS PROCEDURES
  • Communion will be distributed by clergy and parish staff only.

We strongly encourage you to utilize online giving stawh.weshareonline.org. This is the safest and easiest way to support our church both for the giver as well as for the staff and volunteers who count the donations.

COMMUNION PROCEDURES
  • Holy Communion will be distributed in people’s hands. Gloves may not be worn for the reception of Holy Communion. The communicant’s hands should be open and flat to allow the Communion ministers to avoid touching the communicant’s hands.
  • Communion ministers will thoroughly wash their hands prior to Mass, use hand sanitizer before distributing Holy Communion and will wash their hands after distributing Holy Communion.
  • The precious blood will not be offered to the congregation.
  • Use of personal hand sanitizer before communion is strongly encouraged.

MASS DEPARTURE PROCEDURES
  • After the final blessing, parishioners must remain in their pew.
  • Pews will be dismissed in an orderly fashion starting in the front of the church to the back of the church. This will be similar to how you exit an airplane.

  • You must exit your pew when prompted unless you wish to stay to pray. The Church will be closed at 2 p.m. so that it can be thoroughly sanitized.

  • You can drop your weekly offertory as you depart or mail your offering to the rectory, drop it into the mailbox at the rectory entrance or give online at stawh.weshareonline.org

  • We will also disinfect door handles, and other frequently touched surfaces occur throughout the day.
  • Parish staff, ushers, and volunteers will be required to wear face masks when performing any functions in connection with Mass.
  • You are reminded to follow CDC recommendations regarding your own health. If you fall into an “at risk” category, please stay home and watch mass online or on TV.

WEEKEND MASS
