Hello MSW Students
In the wake of the tragedy that occurred on Monday night at MSU, the MSW Advising Team/Graduate Office wanted to reach out – with support, connection, and care. We know that you have been getting a lot of information and communication from various people and entities at the University. We hope that these have been helpful in navigating services, and opportunities. But, we also wanted to share more personal outreach as we all try to figure out what this means, and how to process it all.
One of things that we discussed yesterday at the MSW session was the permission for self-care. Many of us go into “Social Worker mode” when things occur (even things not within our control). We channel our internal “helper”, and put our energy into finding solutions, supporting others, and figuring out how to get through it. But, especially with something this tragic, and with an impact so large, we have to acknowledge our own needs as well. Taking care of yourself does NOT equate to being selfish. Although that may be our initial thought, we need to push that to the side, and honor ourselves. AND, then, when able/ready, we can take care of others.
Another thing that came up is to honor that we ALL have been impacted. For those of you off-campus, you have the right to feel the same grief, sadness, anger, etc. as to what occurred. We are a community. And, as we know, in understanding systems theory, that when one thing within the system changes, all other parts are impacted. So, no matter your connection to the physical, East Lansing campus, you have the right to what you are feelings and experiencing. On the flip side, there is no obligation regarding those feelings. We all process things differently, and no one is right or wrong as to what this looks like. So, you also do not have to have guilt or feel responsible for not having a reaction that others may be having. Acknowledge and honor yourself.
None of us know exactly how to handle this. We do know that this is not a problem/situation that will be resolved by tomorrow when faculty and staff return to campus. It is not a problem/situation that will be resolved by next Monday, when classes resume. Understanding the on-going, wave-like nature of feelings, emotions, actions, etc. is also important. Stay in today.
The School of SW, including the Advising Team, Administration Team, Instructors and Staff are here. There is on-going discussion around how we will individually and collectively handle classes, normal school functioning, etc. We will offer grace and support, and ask for the same in return. Please reach out if we can be of support, and/or you have not received information regarding something else that is needed. And/or, if you are unsure what is needed, and would like to chat with someone regarding this.
