Message from the DMH/DD/SUS Director

July is Disability Pride Month

Dear Community Partners,

Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July to commemorate the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 in 4 adults in the United State -over 70 million people - have a disability. This month is intended to promote inclusion of people with disabilities and to ensure they are accepted exactly as they are and acknowledge they are a vital part of every community.

The ADA, a landmark civil rights law, prohibits discrimination based on disability, and Disability Pride Month is a way to honor its impact, promote a culture where disabilities are embraced and help erase the stigma attached to having a disability. This stigma can have profound negative impacts on the mental and physical well-being of individuals with disabilities, affecting their sense of identity, belonging and access to opportunities.

NCDHHS Inclusion Connects and Inclusion Works initiatives connect people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to more choices of community services and supports. These initiatives are designed to support people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities to live, work and play in their own communities.

NCDHHS is planning a 35th Anniversary Celebration, "Fulfilling the Promise of Access and Opportunity." It will be held at the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources in Raleigh on July 24, 2025, from 10:00-12:00 p.m. We hope you will join us in the celebration!

Disability Pride Month is the perfect opportunity for all of us to recognize each other's uniqueness and celebrate the individual attributes that make our homes and communities a beautiful place to live and work.

My best,

Kelly
