Dear Community Partners,
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15, and I invite you to join me in celebrating the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities across North Carolina.
These communities are vital to our state’s growth and well-being:
-
Over 1.1 million Hispanic/Latinx residents live in North Carolina, including 20% of the state’s youth.
-
The Hispanic/Latinx population has grown by 40% in the past decade, the fastest of any racial or ethnic group in the state.
-
They contribute significantly to our economy, education, health care, and civic life.
Mental Health & Substance Use: Why It Matters
-
1 in 5 Hispanic/Latinx adults in the U.S. experience a mental health condition each year.
-
8.2% face both mental health and substance use challenges.
-
Yet, only 14.6% receive mental health treatment—highlighting the need for better access.
-
In North Carolina, 28.7% of Hispanic/Latinx individuals are uninsured, the highest rate among all racial/ethnic groups.
To meet these needs, our division has expanded Spanish-language services and created plain-language resources such as the Tailored Plans Toolkit and Care Management Toolkit in Spanish. In addition, the 988 Lifeline now offers 24/7 Spanish-language support via call, text, and chat.
You're Invited:
