Dear Members of the Queens College Community:

I am deeply honored to accept the appointment as interim president of Queens College, effective August 1, 2026. I thank Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and the CUNY Board of Trustees for the opportunity to serve.

I extend my gratitude to President Frank H. Wu for his service and leadership over the past six years. President Wu guided the college through the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, led the development and implementation of the five-year Strategic Plan, and oversaw the college’s recent reaccreditation review by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. I wish him all the best in his retirement from Queens College.

I look forward to returning home to this talented and dedicated community of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and loyal friends of the college, many of whom I have had the privilege of working with over the years. For those of you whom I have not yet had the opportunity to know, let me share a bit about my background.

Most recently, I have been serving as interim provost at Medgar Evers College. My career at Queens College spanned more than thirty years, including nine years as provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. Earlier in my service to the college, I served as acting chief operating officer, acting chief financial officer, dean of the School of Social Sciences, and chair of the Economics Department. I am especially proud to hold the tilte of professor emerita of economics. More recently, I served as Special Advisor to President Wu.

Like many outstanding institutions of higher education, Queens College faces significant opportunities and challenges. I am confident that by drawing upon the talent, experience, and commitment of our community, we will continue to strengthen the college and advance our shared mission of providing an outstanding education for our students.

Over the coming weeks, I will work closely with President Wu to ensure a smooth transition and will begin meeting with members of our campus community and external partners to listen, learn, and chart our path forward together.

Thank you for your support as we continue our work in the spirit of the college’s motto, "Discimus Ut Serviamus," We Learn So That We May Serve.

In partnership,

Betsy Field Hendrey
