April 29, 2020
Dear OLMC Parents,

In this last week of April, we thank God for the successful accomplishment of one full month of e-Learning lessons.  May is already upon us, and we look forward to wrapping up our school year after the completion of four more weeks of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday lessons.  As Catholics, we know that the month of May is dedicated to Our Lady.  This season of devotion to Our Lady seems to arrive at the perfect time this year because we can turn to Her in this time of pandemic and ask for Her intercession on our behalf before the throne of Her Son.  Mary is the best of mothers, and she will certainly ask her Son to give us the strength to help us finish up this year strong and bless the months ahead.

Normally each year, we start the OLMC registration process in June.  This year, however, we are going to start registration a month earlier, and we plan on sending out the registration link before the end of this week.  Mrs. Seaman will be sending out the registration link soon, so please keep an eye out for this email.  We look forward to partnering with you again next year.

At this time, teachers are working together to brainstorm creative ideas of ways the students can receive a sense of closure to this unusual year.  On Thursday, May 21, the junior high teachers will be hosting the annual awards ceremony for the 7th and 8th grade students.  More details about this event will be forthcoming.  Additional end-of-the-year events are still being discussed, and we are waiting to see how and when our restrictions will be lifted and gatherings will be permitted once again.

OLMC School is pleased to announce that we are offering two scholarships for our 8th graders who will be attending Guerin Catholic next year.  Information about how to apply for these scholarships was sent to parents of 8th graders last Friday.  The students need to use their parents’ email to ask two teachers for a recommendation, one of which must be from a current teacher.  Just to clarify, these recommendations for which the students request is not an official letter of recommendation.  The teachers have been given a form to fill out for each student.  Once completed, these recommendations will come directly to me. Just a friendly reminder that these scholarship applications are due Thursday, May 7.

May is also the month in which homeroom teachers work hard to construct class lists for the next year.  They take a considerable amount of time to carefully place each student individually in a class that would help to ensure his/her success for the next academic year and ensure that each child has a friend in next year's class.  Because of the attention that has been given to the arrangement of these class lists, I kindly request that you do not ask for a change of homeroom for your children once school is out. If you currently have a difficult situation that might merit a change or a separation from a student or two, then please let me know as soon as possible through email.  The reason for a switch must be urgent and would not consist in a mere preference for a particular teacher.  All of our teachers are quality educators; they care for their students and deliver instruction in a professional manner.   If you do have a request, I ask that you please put it in writing and email it to me before the end of the day on Wednesday, May 6.  I cannot guarantee that the switch will happen, but I will certainly share your concern with the child's teacher.  Please note that I cannot change students from one class to another during the summer months.  In doing so, I run the risk of unintentionally switching another child into a class that would not best meet his/her overall needs.  I firmly believe that the teachers know best regarding the placement of each child given the class dynamics, and my preference as an administrator is to leave the classes as they were originally designed by the teachers.  Thank you for your understanding and support!

This Sunday is the 4th Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday.  Let us pray particularly this weekend for the four priests who serve us at Our Lady of Mount Carmel: Fr. Richard, Fr. Paternoster, Fr. Hurley, and Fr. DeCarlo. As good shepherds, they continually pour themselves out selflessly for us, their flock. By their preaching and example, they teach us the meaning of Christ’s words found in Sunday’s Gospel, “ I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (Jn 10:10).  May we live more deeply rooted in Christ Jesus and enjoy the abundant life that He offers us each day.

In Christ, our life,
Sister Maria Benedicta, O.P.
