A Christ-centered community,
provides excellence in education
to meet the needs of the whole child.
August 28, 2019
Dear OLMC Parents,

I just want to take a moment to thank all of you for your participation in our parent orientations in the past month. The Meet the Teacher Night last evening marked our last official orientation of the year. Your attendance at these events is so edifying for the administration and staff at Our Lady because it shows us that you are committed to working together as we educate your children. At Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, we firmly believe that parents are the primary educators of their children. God has blessed you all with this exalted vocation of forming your children and has given you all of the graces you need to assist you in this noble pursuit. If you have any concerns this year about your children, I ask that you please keep the lines of communication open and email your child’s teacher. You are always welcome to email Mr. Fletcher or me. We are both honored to serve your families, as we strive each day to build up the Kingdom of God, one child at a time.

Just for your information, those children who have turned in signed forms from the Blood Drive on August 18 will have an Out of Uniform Day on Thursday, August 29. Our school’s partnership with the Knights of Columbus went very well this year; one hundred units of blood were collected, and thankfully, this generous amount will benefit over 300 people in need.

Lastly, I pray that your Labor Day weekend will afford your families a much-needed rest and extra time to appreciate the gift of each other, grateful for all of the blessings God has bestowed upon us.

In Christ,
Sister Maria Benedicta, O.P.

Carpool Reminders:
The safety of your children is very important to our teachers & staff. Carpool procedures are in place to help ensure the safety of all children. Please review the Daily Arrival & Dismissal and Carpool Procedures in the Family Policy Guide pgs 15-16 and the carpool traffic flow maps for the proper procedures. If you have any questions, please contact the school at 317-846-1118 or [email protected]. Here are a few helpful reminders.

Morning Carpool:
  • All children should be dropped off using one of the two carpool lanes: One line is behind the school and one line is in front of church.
  • Each line should be a single line in the morning. Do not pull around the car in front of you.
  • Pull all the way forward until traffic stops. The front of both lines is the intersection in parking lot where the two lines meet at the crosswalk from the playground.
  • Do not stop short - this creates a shorter line and fewer children exiting cars leading to delays for those behind you. This is especially a problem in the line behind the school as parents want to drop their children closest to the Kindergarten & Parish Hall entrances.
  • Wait for the teacher on duty (7:30-7:45am) to wave the line forward.
  • Do not pull around the car in front of you. It is dangerous for children to be exiting cars when other cars are moving around them.
  • Children should not be entering the school through the front doors unless prior arrangements have been approved by the school administration.

Afternoon Carpool:
  • Families should be using the carpool lanes either in back of school or in front of church.
  • No one should be parked in the neighborhoods next to the school (Hamp Ct, Bennett Rd, etc).
  • There should not be any children on the playground or surrounding areas during afternoon carpool. This includes siblings who do not attend Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School.
  • If you leave your car to meet your child, please turn off your car. It is a safety concern for an unattended car to be left running. There are many cars which creates a lot of exhaust everyone breathes in.
Blood Drive - Out of Uniform Pass
Tomorrow - Aug 29
For those children that turned in a confirmation sheet that they had a relative/family friend donate blood at the blood drive on August 18 may us their "Out of Uniform" pass tomorrow, Aug 29.

  • Children may wear jeans, khakis or other clean, casual type slacks with appropriate tops. No sweat pants, shorts, or athletic pants may be worn. (Boys navy blue uniform shorts are the only acceptable shorts.)
  • T-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. may be worn, but they must be appropriate to the Catholic environment of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School.
  • It is permissible for girls to wear a casual skirt on out of uniform days, as long as the skirt follows the guidelines for uniform skirts and the hem touches the top of the knee or longer.
  • Girls may also wear Capri pants (mid-calf).

Out of Uniform Spirit Day - OLMC Birthday!
Wednesday, Sep 4 is OLMC School's 63rd Birthday!  To celebrate we will be serving birthday cake during lunch periods. Thank you to the PTO for organizing this birthday celebration!

Wednesday, Sep 4 will also be a Spirit day. Students will be able to show their school spirit. The children are welcome to wear jeans or khakis along with a Spiritwear shirt, Blue Ribbon shirt, or a yellow/blue shirt that reflect our school colors.  No shorts please (boys navy uniform shorts are the only acceptable shorts).   Click here for the Family Policy Guide pg 32 if you have questions.
Lost & Found
Check the picture to the left to see if aything belongs to your family. (Lands' End belt size 10, Fila shoes size 8, sparkly ruler, musical giraffe, etc).

There are bins for lost & found items in the Parish Hall and outside the gym. Items that are labeled with a name are returned to the child's homeroom teacher. We highly encourage you to label all items, especially lunchboxes, water bottles, uniform items, hats, gloves, etc. These are the most common items that end up in the lost & found.

Items are kept for several weeks and then donated to the Used Uniform Committee or the Merciful H.E.L.P. Center.

SCRIP NEWS:
SCRIP sales begin during afternoon carpool, at The Rock (weather permitting), this Thursday, August 22 . We will plan to be there each Thursday, until we have to move inside to the atrium due to weather.

We will also be selling Scrip during Meet the Teacher, next Tuesday, August 27.

We also want to encourage everyone to take advantage of MyScripWallet this year.  MyScripWallet allows you to purchase Scrip online 24/7, and have the Scrip you purchase available to use via your cell phones. It significantly improves the convenience of utilizing Scrip.

Please give it a try. If you have any questions, please contact Stephanie Lesher, [email protected] .

Meals for the Sisters
Once again Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School families will be “hosting" Wednesday Meals for the Sisters during the school year. To help show our support, love and appreciation for all that the Sisters do for our school community, children and families, we have created a sign up genius for families to volunteer to prepare a meal to bring to the Sisters at the Convent each Wednesday throughout the school year. There are 6 Sisters residing at the convent and one of the Sisters has a corn allergy. Please make sure meals do not contain corn of any kind.

Please click on the link below if you would like to volunteer to provide a meal. We ask that you start with only one or two volunteer slots to allow many of our new families the opportunity to sign up. If, after a few weeks, there are additional spots still open, please then feel free to sign up for more spots. If you have any questions, please contact Maria Bedford at  [email protected] or  317-691-6544. Thank you so much for your generosity!

Choir News
St. Augustine wrote: “He who sings well, prays twice!” Of course, ALL of us should sing in prayer at Mass, but participating in our Children’s Liturgical Choirs is fun, rewarding, and helps our children take Catholic liturgical music to the next level. We have two parish choirs specifically for children; a child may join either – or BOTH! These do not in any way conflict with OLMC School choirs, and we can work around sports seasons if necessary.

“School-ah Schola” Weekday Liturgical Choir: for grades 3-8 at OLMC School. Sing for MWF 8:00 am school Masses. Rehearsals: every Monday, 3:30-4:30 PM in the church music room. You are welcome to join any time.
Pueri Cantores Children’s Choir: for grades 2-8 from any school. Sing for Saturday evening Mass once a month. Rehearsals: every Tuesday, 4:15-5:15 pm in church music room. You are welcome to join any time.

Enrollment forms for both choirs are linked below. For questions, contact Rex Rund at [email protected] or 317-663-4007.
