February 12, 2020
Dear OLMC Parents,

Good afternoon!  With this 4-day weekend upon us, I hope that your family can enjoy some days together that are restful and rejuvenating.  Tomorrow, we will be having a Charity Dollar Day; the proceeds will go to the O’Connor House. The students will be able to wear jeans or khakis with a red or pink shirt in honor of St. Valentine’s Day.  The younger students will also be having Valentine’s parties tomorrow, and I thank all of those room parents and other volunteers who have graciously given of their time to prepare for these festivities.

It is hard to believe that our new lunch program has been operating now for almost a month, and I would like to thank our Lead Lunch Volunteers for dedicating many hours of their time to make sure our children are well-fed.  We do need one or two more Lead Lunch Volunteers to help this program run most efficiently. Please email the office at olmcschool@olmc1.org if you could serve our students in this capacity.  Remember that if you volunteer as one of these lunch leaders, you can skip the afternoon carpool line and instead pick up your children in the atrium on the day that you serve.

The following is an update about our lunch program from Mrs. Aimee Fleming and Mrs. Katie Rigg, two of our Lead Lunch Volunteers members of our PTO:

"We are in week 4 of our new lunch program, and we thank you for your patience, support and kindness during the launch.  Since fellow parents are volunteering to oversee the lunch program, we appreciate all of the positive comments and feedback!

Attached are a few procedural updates :

*  If your child(ren) pack(s) a lunch, please be sure to add utensils and napkins.  We only have utensils provided from the vendors for the children that order lunches.  If you would like to donate unopened boxes of sporks, Dixie cups and/or napkins, we will gladly accept them as extras.

* After placing an order, please check that you have received a confirmation for your order. It usually arrives by email in less than a minute. If you do not receive an email confirmation, your order was never fully processed. Also, it is helpful to just check your confirmation to ensure you ordered for the correct dates and to verify you ordered the correct items.

*  If your child is sick, you can reach out to Campus Cuisine before 8:00am to cancel your order ( info@campuscuisine.net 404-406-4017 - leave a message if office is closed) If you do not cancel the order, you are welcome to contact the office before 10:30am to make arrangements to pick up the lunch; otherwise, all unclaimed lunches are donated to the priests, custodians and school staff at 12:40pm.

*  If your child does not want their lunch, it will also be donated to the above individuals (we don’t want to give them a lunch if they are eating a packed lunch only to have it thrown in the trash).

*  Water and milk: We will try to remind students to grab their drinks; however, if they do not want it, we will return it to the refrigerator.

*  If a student does not have a lunch ordered and forgets their lunch box, the office will make an effort to contact you in the morning; otherwise, the student will receive an alternate lunch in the cafeteria (Uncrustable and/or Lunchable).

*  We are volunteers and *may* make mistakes, but we will find a back-up plan. Everyone WILL have a lunch!  Thank you for being understanding of those small human errors...they are going to happen.

Lastly, we can’t thank all of the volunteers that are present for lunch duty on their assigned day because you are VITAL!  If you are interested in being a lunch lead, we would love to add you to the team.

Thank you again, and please feel free to reach out to Aimee Fleming with feedback, including solutions, at aimeemfleming@hotmail.com.

God bless,
Your Lunch Lead Team"

From the Nurse:
Please remember, the peak of cold and flu season is also upon us and we want to provide you with important tips on how to protect your child and family from these illnesses.

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow. Throw used tissues away in the trash.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay away from people who are sick or not feeling well and avoid close contact with others through hugging, kissing or shaking hands.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects such as toys and doorknobs.
  • Seek assistance from your doctor or a health professional if you see or experience symptoms that cause concern.
  • Any student with a fever should remain at home until they are fever free without medicine for 24 hours.
  • Any student with vomiting/diarhea should remain at home until they are symptom free without medicine for 24 hours.

Additional tips on how to keep kids germ-free at school can be found  here .

Volunteers Needed!
Destination Jesus Retreat for High Schoolers is still in need of parent volunteers during the overnight hours.

Please consider investing JUST 3 HOURS of your time during one either Friday (2/14) or Saturday (2/15) evening between the hours of 10:30 pm and 7:30 am.

We call this volunteer role “Guardian Angels”.  Why? During those three hour shifts, you will ensure that the youth don’t leave the sleeping areas that they are assigned to, and you will be there to help if any of the youth have a personal need.   To be quite honest, based on many years of volunteering, this is an absolutely beautiful time to support this amazing retreat, but is also a great opportunity to spend just 3 hours reading, praying and having personal reflection time.

To make it really easy for you, here is the link to the volunteer site – don’t hesitate to go sign up now…

The life of a disciple has three stages that
are continuously being renewed. We need
to ENCOUNTER Jesus everyday. We
EQUIP ourselves as we grow in the faith.
We ENGAGE the world around us by
sharing the love of God. Each night of our
missio n we’ll explore how we can move
through these stages and become engaged disciples of Jesus.

Jim Beckman serves as the executive director of Evangelization and Catechesis for the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. Jim also is the executive director of ImpactCenter, a nonprofit dedicated to leadership development in the Catholic Church and serves as an adjunct professor for the Augustine Institute, teaching on leadership and discipleship.
