A Christ-centered community,
provides excellence in education
to meet the needs of the whole child.
September 25, 2019
Dear OLMC Parents,

Good afternoon!  Today the students will be bringing home a collection of tithing envelopes they can drop in the offertory basket on Sunday Masses throughout the year.  The distribution of these Church envelopes lends itself to a meaningful family discussion about how children can be good stewards by giving of their time, talent, and treasure.  During these conversations, the children will not only grow in skills involving financial management, but they will also learn the importance of supporting the Church through tithing.  This week would also be the perfect time for parents to explain to their children how their Catholic education is supported largely through the tithes of parishioners. I believe that when the children place their envelopes in the offertory basket during Mass, they will feel like real contributors to the Church’s varied ministries.

Every time I bring up the topic of children’s offertory envelopes, I am hearkened back to an experience I had as a 5th grade teacher at OLMC.   Years ago when I was in the classroom, I remember how impressed I was when some of my students shared with me how their parents taught them how to manage the financial gifts the children received.  These fifth-graders were taught to divide their cash into three categories: spending money, saving money, and tithing money. When these students received an allowance or were given money for birthday gifts, they would set aside one-third of the money to go in their Church envelope, one-third would to the bank and be deposited in their savings account, and the other third would be added to their spending money.  It is my hope that these children’s envelopes will ignite a constructive discussion in your family about the responsible way to deal with money, and at the same time, highlight our duties as Catholic Christians to use our gifts to help the poor.

On a different topic, I just wanted to share with you that Lands’ End has been running a 40% sale on uniforms for the last week, and the sale will end tonight.  This type of hefty discount will not come around again any time soon, so I would encourage you to take advantage of this sale. This would be a great time to check your children’s uniforms against the policy guide so you could purchase new uniforms at a discounted rate if you need to do so.  Recently I have noticed that there are a number of girls’ skirts that are too short (the skirts must fall at or below the knee) and boys’ pants that are also too short. The children are certainly growing, and it is a wonderful thing! I appreciate you taking the time to check your children’s uniforms, and hope that you can take advantage of this grand sale while it lasts.

Lastly, I would just want to remind you that Our Lady of Mount Carmel School will be having a 2-hour delay on Friday, September 27.  The school will open at 9:15 am, so please do not drop your children off earlier as there will be no supervision for them. The tardy bell will ring at 9:45 am, and classes will begin at 10 am.  I hope that our students will enjoy the later rise and receive some extra rest on this day.

God bless your week!

In the light of Christ,
Sister Maria Benedicta, O.P.
