A Christ-centered community,
provides excellence in education
to meet the needs of the whole child.
September 4, 2019
Dear OLMC Parents,

We had a wonderful day at school today celebrating Our Lady of Mount Carmel School’s 63rd birthday.  The students were spirit-filled as they dressed in their school colors, and the cake served today by the PTO was beautifully decorated and delicious.  Thank you to all of our parent volunteers for so generously giving of their time so that the whole student body could celebrate our school’s birthday so festively.

Speaking of thanksgiving, the Sisters and I want to sincerely express our gratitude to the families who donated to the Sisters’ Pantry Shower in the last few weeks.  We are truly humbled by the number of gifts we received, and we promise to continue to keep all of our benefactors in our prayers each day. The Sisters and I can attest that we are so grateful to serve such an amazing grace-filled community.  We are certainly blessed to be here!

Lastly, I hope that those students who purchase hot lunches in the cafeteria are enjoying the option our food service Aladdin is providing.  This year we simplified the choices and added a packaged salad for sale. Gretchen Capo, our Kitchen Director, recommends that parents choose the auto-replenish option on their Pay For It account so that lunch balances will not fall short and a child, as a result,  will have to receive a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Mrs. Capo advised that if parents set their auto-replenish at $20.00 per week, then a student could be guaranteed a hot lunch for each of the 5 days of that week. We want to ensure that each child is well-nourished and happy with their lunch choices.  Thank you for checking your family’s lunch balance regularly so each child can be free to purchase their preferred lunch option on a daily basis.

I pray that the Lord bless you and your family with an abundance of grace as you work, play, and pray together.

In His joy,
Sister Maria Benedicta, O.P.

Please refer to the Famliy Policy Guide pages 11, 17-18 for complete policies.
Notifying the School:
  • Call 317-846-1118 or email attendance@olmc1.org.Both secretaries see emails sent to attendance@olmc1.org so this is the recommended method in the event one of them is out of the office that day.
  • If your child is going to be late to school or absent for the day, it is the parent's responsibility to call or email the school office by 9 am.
  • If the school office is not notified, a parent will be contacted to verify the student's absence.
  • Notifying just the child's teacher does not fulfill the requirement of notifying the office.

According to the Indiana Department of Education, a student should be temporarily excluded from school for:
  • A temperature of 100 degrees or higher. A fever should be gone for at least 24 hours (without medication) before the student returns to school
  • Most inflammatory eye conditions, such as pink eye
  • Rashes that are known to be contagious or infectious
  • Head cold of any consequence, especially with a persistent cough and excessive drainage
  • Sore or inflamed throat -- if strep throat is diagnosed, the student needs to be on medication for at least 24 hours before returning to school
  • Discharge from the ears
  • Diarrhea or vomiting (must be symptom free for 24 hours without medication)

If your child is sent home ill with a possible contagious condition during the day, he/she will not be permitted to return to school that same day. Students that were sent home, or have been absent during the school day, may not participate in extra-curricular events that day or evening.

  • The tardy bell rings at 7:45am each day.
  • Please keep in mind that your child is tardy if they are not in the classroom at 7:45am. It takes several minutes to walk from the car to their classroom.
  • Children may be dropped off starting at 7:15am.
  • The carpool line tends to back up between 7:35-7:45 each day so it is recommended to try to drop your children off between 7:15-7:30am.
  • 7:15am is the earliest that children may be dropped off - we do not have supervision available prior to 7:15am.
  • If you child will be late due to an appointment, please make sure to call or email the school office before 9am. 317-846-1118 or attendance@olmc1.org

Make-Up Work:
All students who have an excused absence (refer to page 17-18 of the Family Policy Guide for definitions of excused & unexcused absences) have the same amount of time missed to make-up missed work. For example, if a student was ill two days, they have two days, upon return to school, to complete and turn in missed assignments.
  • Kindergarten does not send home make-up work.
  • Students in Grades 1-6
  • Homework must be requested before 9:00 a.m.
  • On the second day of the absence and will be placed in the school atrium to be picked up by parents after carpool.
  • Homework will not be sent home with other students.
  • Homework must be requested each subsequent day a student is absent.
  • Junior High students
  • Students must self-advocate in dealing with their make-up work (this includes specials like Art & Music).
  • They must check Edmodo for homework and any other class information that may have been posted by the teacher on the day of their absence.
  • Parents are free to come to school after dismissal to retrieve necessary textbooks from their child’s locker. (So ask your student for their locker number & combination!)
  • The students must refer to the designated policy of each teacher in order to fulfill the students’ own academic obligations.
Lost & Found
Check the picture to the left to see if anything belongs to your family. With the cooler morning temps, we are seeing an increase in sweatshirts. One has a new logo with no name (child's large)

There are bins for lost & found items in the Parish Hall and outside the gym. Items that are labeled with a name are returned to the child's homeroom teacher. We highly encourage you to label all items, especially lunchboxes, water bottles, uniform items, hats, gloves, etc. These are the most common items that end up in the lost & found.

Items are kept for several weeks and then donated to the Used Uniform Committee or the Merciful H.E.L.P. Center.

Cyber Safety
Beware of a new scam involving Gmail & Google Calendar. If you use Gmail for your business or personal email, you could be at risk. One of the latest cyber scams going around adds fake events to unsuspecting victims' calendars.
The event will include a short event description complete with a dangerous phishing link. Typically, the event claims that "You've won prize money", or that "There's a money transfer in your name". The description tells you to click the link and follow the directions to claim your money.
OLMC School does not put links into the events on our school calendar but we wanted to share this information with our school families to help keep them safe on the internet.

Remember, the following tips to prevent being scammed:
  • Never click on links in emails or in calendar notifications that you weren't expecting. Even if it appears to be from someone you know, it's best to pick up the phone and call them to be sure it's legitimate.
  • Always hover over links to see where they're taking you before clicking. The link may take you to a different address from the URL that is shown.
  • By default, Google Calendar events are automatically added to your calendar, even if you haven't responded. You can turn this setting off by opening your Google Calendar settings from a desktop browser.
