Messenger Weekly News
August 17, 2023
Dear Church Family,

If you have been around the church much this week—or anywhere else downtown—you have seen firsthand that there is a lot of hustle and bustle in the neighborhood. Folks carrying unwieldy piles of luggage and furniture into apartment buildings is a frequent sight on the streets around the church these days.

Many of you have said that Columbia changes significantly when the college students return, and I’m excited to witness the transformation. It’s a joy and privilege to have a front row seat to all the signs of life and new beginnings occurring right outside my office window! More than that, it’s humbling to consider all the ways our church has been there—and continues to be there—for generations of young adults in Columbia.

This Sunday in worship we are wrapping up our two week series, “Quad and Cathedral,” by giving thanks to God for the important work of Jesus Christ that takes place every day through our wonderful college ministry, the Neighborhood—and also by considering how God may be calling us to support it. In addition, we’ll be talking a look at 1 Timothy 4:10-16, and asking what lessons we can learn from it for trying to follow Christ today.

Thank you for all the ways you bless all the generations of this place. See you in church!

In Christ,

Daniel

Russell Chapel CME Church’s Food Pantry
A significant number of families in Columbia are facing food insecurity with some having to make decisions about health care or food. One-way MOUMC has responded is by supporting the Russell Chapel CME church’s food pantry with monthly food donations. For over 20 years Russell Chapel has given food twice a month to those in need. It is a very small church and relies heavily on our support.

Please consider making a monetary donation using the church website and using the drop-down menu ‘give’, then select Russell Chapel.

BACKPACKS OF LOVE
FOS Project For Our Youth
August will be our last month for the youth of our church to bring supplies for the Backpacks of Love.

This month we will once again be collecting small stuffed animals for the backpacks. We collected stuffed animals in April for the backpacks but unfortunately they were damaged by water from the fire and we were not able to salvage them. The children in Sunday School are once again asked to bring a small stuffed animal. When purchasing the stuffed animals, please remember that these will be placed in a backpack with the other supplies we have collected this year. When the backpacks are delivered to the Festival of Sharing office, a small blanket is also added to the backpack so it is important that we only collect small stuffed animals so there is room to add the blanket.

We will have the students put all the items collected this year in the backpacks in early September during Sunday School. We will use money donated to Festival of Sharing to purchase the backpacks that we need. Thanks to everyone who has donated to help support this mission. It's great to see our youth involved in this mission work to show their love and support to others.
Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build
Sign-up Genius is now attached for MUMC volunteers to sign-up for the Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build to be held Sept. 19-28 in Columbia.

Volunteers are needed every day to help with the check-in desk; serve provided food for breakfast, lunch, or snacks; distribute water to volunteers; help builders; and put the finishing touches on the inside of new homes. Breakfast, lunch, beverages and water along with a HFH shirt will be provided to volunteers.

MUMC will be helping with building and interior finishing on Saturday, Sept. 23. Skilled workers from HFH will be instructing and supervising all volunteer builders.  Site work will take place from 7:00 am – 4 pm daily and includes painting rooms inside, laying floors, installing cabinets, applying siding, etc. Your help is needed and appreciated!

PRAYER MINISTRY TEAM
God spoke to Jeremiah with these very helpful words: “Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me, says the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes…” (Jeremiah 29:12-14a NRSV)

In other words, God really wants to hear our prayers. We all have concerns we need to share with God. Your prayer team at MUMC wants to join you in praying for your needs and concerns, and those of your family and friends.

You can make a prayer request by using the Connection cards in the pews or by contacting either Jim Helms ([email protected]) or Carole Babel ([email protected]). Also, let us know if you would like to serve on the prayer team. In addition to updating a weekly prayer list, this team also plans occasional events to engage the congregation in group prayer.
Contact Jim Helms if you are interested in the Prayer Team or have a prayer request.

Arts in Worship
A NEW ART EXHIBIT AT MUMC!!!
Be sure to stop by the parlor soon to see the WELCOME BACK EXHIBIT curated by Hannah Reeves of Sager Reeves Gallery. Hannah selected pieces to match the ENERGY of our church and the EXCITEMENT of beginning a new academic year together. You’ll love the color and vibrancy of the works by three different artists. Art and beauty have a close connection to our spirits, thus our well-being. By contemplating the vibrant colors and swirling patterns we gain insights into a kind of sacred geometry. Bringing artistry and thoughtful conversation into our space helps us on our journey of self-discovery and embellishes an atmosphere where our spirits can find both comfort and joy. You'll find information on each piece next to it on the wall, and can learn more and inquire by scanning the QR code on any artwork label. The gallery handles all sales by these talented, striving artists.
MUSIC MINISTRY
It was an awesome experience for my family to worship together in the 8:00 service last Sunday. I've had a nice couple of days settling into my new role at MUMC and look forward to worshiping with you all regularly. I feel welcomed and blessed to be here.

This week, the City Singers will present "Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera for the special music selection during the City service. As you may be aware, Andrew Lloyd Webber's show was the longest-running production on Broadway before closing earlier this year. The lyrics of the song detail the influence of a past love interest long after a relationship ends, but I invite you to consider them in the broader context of one's ability to impact the lives of others.

The Chancel Choir will be singing "I Have Longed for Thy Saving Health," a motet based on Psalm 119 that was written by William Byrd (c. 1543-1623), an English Renaissance musician. Byrd is widely regarded as one of the finest English composers of all time and wrote prolifically. He was devoutly Catholic during a time of great religious upheaval in England but managed to continue practicing his faith privately while coexisting peacefully with adherents of the Anglican church. This was due in part to his association with Queen Elizabeth I, who was thought to be more religiously tolerant than other leaders of her time.

As always, I hope that the music we present during our services this weekend helps you gain a sense of peace and an understanding of how much God loves you.
