Pastor's Letter
By S.Jewell S McGhee
On Sunday at 10:30am in the St. Charles convention center, during annual conference, I will be participating in an ordination service. The hand of the Bishop Bob Farr, cabinet members, and pastoral mentors Rev. Kim Shirar and Rev. Mark Statler will be laid on me as they pray and affirm my calling into life-long ministry as an elder in the United Methodist Church.
You could say that this marks the end of the beginning. Though the beginning has been a rather long way. It was 8 years ago that I sat down in Pastor Kim’s office and talked about becoming a pastor. Since then, I have served in various capacities in 5 different United Methodist churches: University UMC (now Grace UMC) in University City; Immanuel UMC in Edwardsville, IL; Anchor Room at Centenary in St. Louis; Maplewood UMC in Maplewood; and this beloved church: Missouri UMC.
The method for ordination in Methodist church is long and thorough. Books to read, a discernment retreat, the support of a local church and pastor, an interview with the district superintendent... and that’s all before the first step! Then you have paperwork, a bachelor’s degree and interviews to be a “Certified Candidate.” After time, more paperwork and more interviews, you can move onto the next step of becoming “Commissioned.” The commissioning service also involves the laying on of hands in the midst of annual conference. It is a public call and affirmation of ministry. This enters you into a period of provisional membership into the conference. You become a “Resident in Ministry” connected to a specific church community. You must have completed your MDiv with specific coursework to move on from this time as well. And of course, there is more paperwork, more interviews and more time. All leading up to a vote by the Clergy session of the Annual conference and this ordination service.
A deeply moving part of the ordination service is when the Bishop traces the line of ordination back through those who have laid hands of ordination on them all the way back to John Wesley.
While this is a big step in my life, this community won’t feel much of a difference. I will still be appointed here in the year(s) to come. I will still lead worship and preach. We will still learn together and grow together in faith and in our mission for Columbia. And I will continue to thank God for each of you and your impact on my life!
God’s grace is deep, wide, high and long! Relish in God’s goodness, in God’s lavish love and in God’s endless compassion!

Wishing Pastor Troy Farewell
|
|
You are invited to stop at the Connector on Sunday, June 18, 2023 after the 8:00 a.m. or the 11:00 a.m. service to wish Pastor Troy good luck as he leaves Missouri United Methodist Church.
Light refreshments will be served.
Hosted by Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Lead Team and United Women in Faith.

|
I am looking forward to being with the MUMC church family this Sunday as I fill the pulpit while Pastor Troy and Jewell are at Annual Conference. We worship and love and serve a God who delights in us and enjoys bringing surprises and blessings into our lives. Sometimes people call an unexpected or surprising event a coincidence but I like to call it a God Wink. If you find yourself in worship at one of our three services this Sunday you might discover that you too have been God Winked!
And, coincidentally, I'll be there too, looking for you, in the Holy Place!
Pastor Amy

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cafe
|
|
The Saturday Morning Breakfast for unhoused or food-insecure individuals will be hosted at MUMC for the four Saturdays in June. In April, we served 45-55 individuals each week. The guests enjoyed the food, and our volunteers enjoyed being of service.
You can help by volunteering to serve breakfast and/or by donating breakfast food items. Families and youth are welcome! Volunteers work from 7:30 am to 9:30 am, setting up the food, serving hot foods, visiting with our guests, and cleaning up. If you cannot serve, we also need donations of food items.
You can sign up to volunteer or provide food via the SignUp Genius link below. Food can be left in the MPR kitchen or with the front desk. Please label donations Saturday Morning Breakfast.

Show-Me Central Habitat for Humanity Pre-Blitz Build
|
|
Did you know that The United Methodist Church is a sponsor for The September Blitz Build in Columbia MO? Missouri United Methodist Church congregants have already sent $10,000 to cover part of a home’s building materials. What is needed now is your time and service to help in the Pre-Blitz Build taking place now. Teams of two and greater are already at work on homes Thursday through Saturday being built now for Habitat for Humanity in Columbia’s Boone Prairie subdivision. All volunteer teams work with an experienced skilled supervisor. (Roofing, electrical, and plumbing are done by professionals due to city building codes.) If you like to hammer, paint, lay flooring, etc., there is a spot for you!
(Please read volunteer instructions at this site prior to signing up to work.)
Other opportunities to help during The September 18-29 Blitz Build will be popping up soon. Let’s help build strength, stability and self-reliance through home ownership.
Let’s show up for Columbia’s build!

BACKPACKS OF LOVE
FOS Project For Our Youth
|
|
The focus item for the Backpacks of Love in June is a child’s t-shirt. This can be an over-sized t-shirt since many of the children that receive them sleep in them. Children who are participating in this mission are asked to put the t-shirt in the backpack in the Sunday school area.
This is a great opportunity for our children to show their love and support of other children in need. Thanks to everyone who brought in the various items this year.

God spoke to Jeremiah with these very helpful words: “Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me, says the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes…” (Jeremiah 29:12-14a NRSV)
In other words, God really wants to hear our prayers. We all have concerns we need to share with God. Your prayer team at MUMC wants to join you in praying for your needs and concerns, and those of your family and friends.
You can make a prayer request by using the Connection cards in the pews or by contacting either Jim Helms ([email protected]) or Carole Babel ([email protected]). Also, let us know if you would like to serve on the prayer team. In addition to updating a weekly prayer list, this team also plans occasional events to engage the congregation in group prayer.

The MUMC Choirs are working hard as we enter the last two weeks before our Summer break. After June 18, Pastor Troy's last Sunday with us, the choir will go on break until Rev. Daniel Hilty's first Sunday on July 9. Then after the 9th, the choirs will go back on break until July 23, which will be my last Sunday at MUMC. From there, the music ministries will continue as usual under the new director.
This Sunday, June 11, the City Singers will perform "Come By Here", arranged by Kyle Pederson. Pederson sets this familiar and well-loved tune with heartfelt care. From the arranger: "In this adaptation of Come By Here, there are two particular ways I seek to expand the meaning [of the song]: first, the piano accompaniment is improvisatory in nature and intended to symbolize the creative movement of God's spirit. Second, though I love the invitational nature of the lyric 'come by here, Lord,' I also believe that God's spirit is already with us in all of our circumstances. In our joy, grief, rising, falling, living, and dying, God is there with us, working toward wholeness and healing. So, the lyric morphs into a more declamatory statement of 'you are here' as the piece reaches its climax. And those words are the final words the listener hears as well." Then, in the Cathedral service, the Chancel Choir will sing "Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee" by Crawford Thoburn, a setting of the English translation of a 12th Century Latin text. We will also be featuring Chancel Choir member, and former Associate Pastor of MUMC, Bruce Jeffries, on the organ.
