Christmas in a war zone

From a place of privilege, it can be easy think of Christmas like this: Cozy. Rosy cheeks. Big smiles. Lots of laughs. Pure innocence. Sleeping babies and silent nights. For many of us, we have been truly fortunate to have Christmases like this to varying degrees.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT, DECEMBER 10, 2023

 When Christmas Isn’t Christmas - Isaiah 11:1-9

The Grinch didn’t really steal Christmas. He took lights, decorations, and presents. He even took food. But he didn’t take away Christmas. Christmas, he discovered, is in the hearts and relationships of those who celebrate it. Too often we get so caught up in the pageantry of Christmas that we forget about Christ, the one whose birth we’re actually commemorating. What can the Grinch teach us about keeping our priorities straight during the Advent and Christmas seasons?

The Grinch screening and Whoville Fest 2023 was a smashing success! Everyone had a great time and we were so pleased to see so many new faces at the event -- what a great outreach opportunity! We couldn't have had such a success without all our volunteers who planned and decorated, cooked, baked, crafted, pitched tents and led games -- thank you so much! We are blessed to have such a great group of people here at UMCG!

BAKE EXTRA THIS YEAR AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE CANTATA BAKE SALE!

We would love to share in all the goodies made by members of the congregation this holiday season-- so if you could plan on making a little more…. thank you!

GET YOUR NEW NAMETAG!

We are making new name tags for the congregation! Before we do that, we need each of you to check Elexio and make sure the name in the system is what you want to use on your name tag. We also can make tags with your choice of magnets or clips.

Please update your profile and let the office know if you need a clip name tag by December 28. If you need help setting up Elexio, please refer to this video. If you still need help, call or stop by the office.

WOMEN'S MINISTRY

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this worship service and to the lunch and evening refreshments. We appreciate your work on planning, ushering, setting up and decorating tables, providing food, reading, singing, promotions and support. Extra thank you to all that helped in the back of the house/kitchen area -- we are grateful for all your time and effort.

CREATION CARE

Christmas lights on our tree and decorating our home definitely add to the feeling of Christmas. When you need to replace lights choose LED. They use up to 95% less energy than conventional bulbs and stay lit when one bulb goes out. Turning your lights off before going to bed will also save energy and when the lights are not working and need to be replaced, remember to recycle them with the Kane County Recycling program. During the months of December and January the Creation Care team will once again be collecting unusable Christmas light strings.

A box for collection is located in the Donation Station room.
