ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE ARTICLE: "BETTER TOGETHER"

BETTER TOGETHER …THE MERGE

By Carol W Zars (Edited from Step Back in Time by Shirley Anderson)

In 1871, to fill the spiritual needs of the Swedish settlers, the Swedish Methodist Church was founded. Their first church building was on the corner of First and James Streets. As the members became more “Americanized” the church was renamed the Emmanuel Methodist Church. In 1907, they built a new church on the corner of Third and Hamilton.

The merger of the Emmanuel Methodist Church and the First Methodist Church in Geneva was spurred on by the dissolution of the Swedish Conferences in 1942. Swedish Methodist Churches in northern Illinois became members or participants in the Rock River Conference to which the First Methodist Church of Geneva already belonged. The merger conference began in 1948 and a year later the two churches became one. The first regular service took place on July 3, 1949. And so, was born—The Methodist Church of Geneva. The first pastor was Pastor Herbert Rasey who served from 1948-1955.

The Emmanuel Church was renamed Wesley Hall but was forever known as the “red church.” The “red church” became the home for Sunday School classes, social events, and was also rented out for community meetings and functions. The cost of maintaining two historical churches led to the decision to sell the “red church” and add an educational wing to the First Methodist Church. The “red church”, though it has changed hands many times, holds lots of memories for those of us old enough to have attended Sunday School in this historic church.

We meet each Thursday at 7:00AM at the Colonial Café in St. Charles at Tyler and East Main Street (Rt. 64). After discussion, breakfast is ordered and we finish about 8:30.
