Messenger - November 17, 2023

We illuminate our community with God’s grace as we lovingly accept, listen to, and serve all in the Spirit of Jesus.

PASTOR'S BLOG

What's there to be grateful for these days?

Open your newsfeed or newspaper or turn on your news channel and it's nearly all bad. Like genuinely bad, too. Not just the typical fearmongering and clickbait used to push advertisements. As we approach Thanksgiving and come into Gratitude Sunday the practice of gratitude takes real effort.

We Couldn't Have Done It Without You

The Church is a unique organization, where it takes a collection of people who answer God's call to love God and their neighbor to even exist. Without volunteers there is no church. Join us as we celebrate all the ways we've answered the call to be church together.

This church is truly serving the Lord, as evident in the activities that are important to us. We serve the homeless and the hungry as well as providing funds to various agencies that are actively serving as the hands and feet of Jesus. We care for the environment and we care for each other. There is so much more our volunteers are committed to doing.

However, we would like for THIS SUNDAY, November 19th to be a day to celebrate each and everyone of you! We will set a table, offer some munchies, and invite you to take time to know that you have been a very important part of what makes UMCG a wonderful place to be. Thank you! Linda Tamlyn

Potluck Sign-up

Start the season off with our “Take a Walk through Bethlehem” Advent Service and Tea,

Monday, December 4, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m

Meet friends and build fellowship during this Advent season. Please sign up to volunteer to help with either of the Advent Teas on Monday, December 4, 2023. We are looking for food contributions for a tea such as skewered fruit, savory bites and mini-sandwiches, etc. We also need volunteers to help run both on the day. Set up help, servers, and clean up needed. Artistic? Centerpieces are needed for tables where guests may linger and visit. Many hands make the work go faster.

CHURCH IN SOCIETY

Church in Society is coordinating the following sharing opportunities this holiday season:

• Salvation Army Angel Tree

• Gift Card collection to benefit persons served by the Salvation Army, Kane County CASA, and the 2 homeless shelters we support – Lazarus House and Hesed House

Gift cards (especially for the teens) are always appreciated and needed by the organizations listed that provide services to those in need in our community. A box is located in Fellowship Hall on Sundays or in the Church office during the week.

If you’d like to donate toward the purchase of gift cards – please make check payable to “UMCG” and note gift cards and place in the box. Suggested amounts are $15-$25 per gift card. Suggestions for cards are gas cards, Aldi, Target, Walmart, fast food restaurants or movie theaters.

Angel Tree is a program through the Tri-City Salvation Army (St. Charles) where parents of children the S.A. serves register for Christmas gifts.

We have 50 Tags available in Fellowship Hall with suggested items and sizes. Stop by the table in Fellowship Hall and sign-up for an Angel Tag and go shopping!

Unwrapped gifts with Angel Tree Tag attached should be returned to church not later than December 6.

Thank you for sharing the gift and hope of Christmas!

Kane Senior Council (KSC) is looking for volunteers to help deliver meals to seniors in the Geneva area. KSC is a proud member of Meals on Wheels America, delivering nutritious, ready-to-eat meals to homebound seniors in Kane County Mondays-Fridays. In 2022, KSC delivered more than 4,000 meals to seniors in Geneva.

As this number of seniors in need of our services continues to grow, so does our need for volunteers. Volunteers in Geneva pick up meals from our site located at UMCG. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit our website at kaneseniorcouncil.org/get-involved/
