We illuminate our community with God’s grace as we lovingly accept, listen to, and serve all in the Spirit of Jesus.

GUEST BLOG--DR. GREG COATES

Separating Church and State, Matthew 22:15-22

There is this misconception that the Bible calls us to separate church and state - meaning that the people of faith should not engage in political discourse or action. The separation of church and state is a political position that seeks to prevent the government from influencing religion. Jesus and his disciples were engaged in political discourse and action and show us how we might follow in their steps as people who seek love above power. Join Pastor Rob as he helps us follow Jesus in the way of love God and neighbor as we exists as political beings today.

Start the season off with our “Take a Walk through Bethlehem” Advent Service and Tea,

Monday, December 4, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m

Meet friends and build fellowship during this Advent season. Please sign up to volunteer to help with either of the Advent Teas on Monday, December 4, 2023. We are looking for food contributions for a tea such as skewered fruit, savory bites and mini-sandwiches, etc. We also need volunteers to help run both on the day. Set up help, servers, and clean up needed. Artistic? Centerpieces are needed for tables where guests may linger and visit. Many hands make the work go faster.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY

NOVEMBER 26-DECEMBER 17

“WHY THIS JUBILEE? ADVENT REFLECTIONS ON SONGS

OF THE SEASON,” BY JAMES HOWELL

LED BY PASTOR BECKY NICOL

Music is an important part of our Advent and Christmas traditions and celebrations. Join us in a study of reflections on well-known carols and Christmas songs, like O Little Town of Bethlehem, Silent Night, Away in a Manger, The Christmas Song, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and more! We’ll explore the meaning of phrases from these songs and relate them to our daily lives.

Join us for Adult Sunday School classes at 10:30 am, November 26-December 17 in the Parlor. Invite someone to attend with you! This series will be available via Zoom -- click the link below.

Books are recommended as there are daily reflections in the book. The book is available used through Abe Books, Cokesbury, Amazon, and others.

Email Jim McConnell or Pastor Becky Nicol for more information.

CHURCH IN SOCIETY

Church in Society is coordinating the following sharing opportunities this holiday season:

• Salvation Army Angel Tree

• Gift Card collection to benefit persons served by the Salvation Army, Kane County CASA, and the 2 homeless shelters we support – Lazarus House and Hesed House

Gift cards (especially for the teens) are always appreciated and needed by the organizations listed that provide services to those in need in our community. A box is located in Fellowship Hall on Sundays or in the Church office during the week.

If you’d like to donate toward the purchase of gift cards – please make check payable to “UMCG” and note gift cards and place in the box. Suggested amounts are $15-$25 per gift card. Suggestions for cards are gas cards, Aldi, Target, Walmart, fast food restaurants or movie theaters.

Angel Tree is a program through the Tri-City Salvation Army (St. Charles) where parents of children the S.A. serves register for Christmas gifts.

We have 50 Tags available in Fellowship Hall with suggested items and sizes. Stop by the table in Fellowship Hall and sign-up for an Angel Tag and go shopping!

Unwrapped gifts with Angel Tree Tag attached should be returned to church not later than December 6.

Thank you for sharing the gift and hope of Christmas!

The Committee on Church in Society

IN OUR COMMUNITY

Salvation Army Food Pantry needs for November are especially great this month:

Pasta sauce

Canned fruits, vegetables, beans (except green)

Canned meats

Cereals

Mustard

Ketchup

Diapers and hygiene items

Kane Senior Council (KSC) is looking for volunteers to help deliver meals to seniors in the Geneva area. KSC is a proud member of Meals on Wheels America, delivering nutritious, ready-to-eat meals to homebound seniors in Kane County Mondays-Fridays. In 2022, KSC delivered more than 4,000 meals to seniors in Geneva.

As this number of seniors in need of our services continues to grow, so does our need for volunteers. Volunteers in Geneva pick up meals from our site located at UMCG. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit our website at kaneseniorcouncil.org/get-involved/
