Meta’s vanillafying generative AI push – but that’s just part of the GenAI picture

At last week’s Meta Connect 2024 event, GenAI product announcements were front and center, and these products’ impact can’t be underestimated. Before summarizing the announcements most significant for the photo industry, let’s quote Mr. Zuckerberg for a change:

“Meta AI differentiates itself in this category by not just offering state-of-the-art AI models, but also unlimited access to those models for free, integrated easily into our different products and apps,” he said.

“So Meta AI is on track to being the most used AI assistant in the world by the end of this year. In fact, it’s probably already there. … We’re almost at 500 million monthly actives, and we haven’t even launched in some of the bigger countries yet,” Zuckerberg added.

In short, Meta’s GenAI push will result in (much more):

1. Prompt-based image generation

Meta AI’s GenAI ‘Imagine’ features expand across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, with users being able to apply prompts to generate AI photos directly in their social Feeds and Stories.

And what if users can’t be cajoled to create GenAI visuals?

Meta has a plan B: it is also testing the display of personalized AI images created for you based on your interests and trends. The idea is that, unless you opt out, Facebook and Instagram users will have the pleasure of seeing auto-generated “imagined for you” content being directly pushed into their daily feeds.

2. Hybrid image generation

Like Google and Adobe, Meta is also going full steam in adding features that enable you to enhance your photos through AI. Powered by Meta’s Llama 3.2 models, Meta AI is gaining multimodal capabilities, enabling it to understand and edit your photos.

For instance, Meta’s AI tech can look at your photo, understand it, and then generate an accompanying background.

My take? After the great “we’ll serve you content based on who we think you are and what we think you’d like to see” push that’s core and center to today’s social media, the great vanillafying of the images that you view or share is upon us.

Bye-bye truly creative content, bye-bye exciting visuals you’d never thought you’d enjoy viewing, bye-bye Instagram as a platform for artistic exploration?

Will this great vanillafying of images stick? Not everyone is convinced: Axios reports that GenAI content quickly loses interest once the initial excitement that these visuals can be created by machines wears off: “There's a reason so much AI-generated content is now referred to as "slop": Much of it is mediocre, impersonal and monotonous, both thematically and aesthetically.”

It's still too early to tell how much of easy GenAI creation will stick. But what obscures the matter among the champions of “imagined for you” visuals vs. those who label them as “slop”: not all GenAI is created equal.

GenAI, and other AI used for image capture, editing and enhancements, is a multi-faceted beast. It empowers a great variety of features and use cases (ranging from boosting creative exploration to making monotonous imaging tasks easier and faster), and poses a range of opportunities and threats.

Generative AI’s pros and cons are a complex question – one, we’re just at the beginning of getting a grasp on.

This complexity of GenAI's pros and cons was rubbed in during our recent preparation calls with our Visual 1st panelists and fireside chat presenters. These discussions offered a more nuanced perspective on the benefits, drawbacks, opportunities, and threats that (Gen) AI presents to our photo and video industry than that the proponents of “imagined for you” vs. the naysayers of “slop” will make you believe.

Here’s a grab of what you can expect to hear specifically from this year’s Visual 1st fireside chat presenters in terms of AI and (lack of) image authenticity:

  • Does the proliferating AI deployed in smartphone cameras lead to blend cookie-cutter image capture? Could AI-fueled innovation take the smartphone camera’s images to yet a higher level, getting closer and closer to the quality we’re getting from DLSR cameras? (don’t miss Tom Bishop's keynote)
  • GenAI only creates vanilla-style visuals? Think again. In his fireside chat, Douglas Edric Stanley will blow your socks off when showing and discussing how AI algorithms can and will reshape creative practice. And check out his sockless photo here. 😀
  • Is GenAI a threat by ripping off artists and using their visuals for training data? A valid concern, but more and more startups are stepping up to provide GenAI visuals or tools to create the visuals, based on algorithms that used responsibly acquired and fairly compensated training data. Here from Jeff Herbst, investor in BRIA and other AI companies, and past VP of corporate development at NVDIA.
  • The traditional craft of taking powerful images is not gone and lost. In fact, it’s seeing a resurgence – retro keeps gaining momentum. Enjoy viewing the images and hearing the perspectives of Chilean-American artist and documentary photographer Pablo Unzueta who just opened his “The memory of our skin" exhibit with powerful B&W photos taken with his traditional film camera.

In addition to these fireside chat sessions, our panel discussions will also discuss the multi-faceted impact of (Gen)AI on visuals for ecommerce, the solutions for triggering engagement with visuals, and new ways to monetize visuals for photo printing products in their respective panels.

Finally, I can’t wait to see the 30 demos latest innovative (Gen)AI from our impressive lineup of Show & Tell presenters on Oct. 16-17!

Best,

Hans Hartman

And a few more things...

Meta & Arm. AI on-device. On-device computing has been the holy grail of smartphone vendors for a while now – it’s faster, cheaper, and more secure than cloud processing – hence the direction toward on the edge AI computing with Galaxy AI on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Gemini AI on the Google Pixel 9 Pro and Apple Intelligence on the new iPhone 16 series.

Now two vendors that might not have immediately come to mind are throwing their hats in the ring: social media juggernaut Meta and microchip architecture licensor Arm. At Meta Connect 2024 last week these companies announced that they have partnered to work on a pair of compact AI models that are built to run on phones.

Moment. Hello camcorder 2.0. For me the most exciting thing about Apple’s iPhone 16 announcements was Camera Control (see The iPhone 16 lineup: Hello cameraphones 2.0!)

Apparently, camcorder 2.0 was just around the corner with Moment announcing Super Cage. Super Cage is a contraption that connects your iPhone with a power-delivery-capable USB-C hub, microphone jack, headphone jack, SD card reader, extra ports, and the ability to add more to the cage to make filming on iPhone feel more like using a “real” camera.

After now 1 year as Sensaria's CEO, Mike is sharing his observations about the wall décor market and is zooming in on the opportunities for companies like Sensaria to realign their strategies in the post-pandemic era.

Printing United. Gary Pageau’s perspective. Missed the blessings of visiting Vegas a few weeks ago? These are Gary's main takeaways, published on his Dead Pixels Society site:

  • The network is the effect
  • Apparel is just another printing surface
  • Substrates are becoming more versatile, opening up new markets
  • There’s still innovation in fine-art inkjet

Rethinking photography in the age of AI. Paul Melcher’s perspective. Paul's thoughtful analysis centers around his observation that there's still a lot of confusion surrounding GenAI, which requires everyone - including pro photographers – to rethink what their métier is all about.
