A Message from
Reverend Christina

Dear Members and Friends of First Parish,

Our church 2019-2020 church year was very full. Shifting all our programming to online has been a learning curve for the staff and the leadership; and fortunately things seem to be going well.

I do still wonder about congregants who are being left out of the fold because we are holding everything online. To you, I send my love and blessings. Please reach out to me if you would like to connect. It is unclear when we will return to in-person worship. We must practice acceptance and patience for where we are at this time.

Our year round church goal has come to fruition as many are attending and enjoying worship. After working until the end of July, I am taking study leave and vacation for the month of August and will not be engaging in any church activities, nor responding to emails, phone calls, or texts.   During this much needed break, I will be enjoying reflective time alone in a cabin by the sea, taking an authentic movement class online, brainstorming worship with colleagues in a house by a lake, and spending time with my family.

I feel especially good about my time away this summer because Caro Barschow will be leading worship and tending to pastoral care emergencies. I encourage you to join her for Sunday worship.

May the rest of your summer be filled with the beauty of nature and deep connection to your own being. May you find ways to connect with those you love and reach out to those in need. I look forward to returning to you in September.

I love you!

Christina
Introducing our Summer Minister
Caro Barschow

It is an honor to inaugurate the position of Summer Minister at First Parish Portland. The opportunity to lead worship on Sundays and provide pastoral care with, and for, this community is a privilege and a responsibility I will hold with joy, love and earnestness.

I look forward to journeying with you in August. I acknowledge that for all of us, it is a challenging time. For some, it’s a time of crisis. May joining together through
the summer spark vitality, warmth and hope. May it lift our spirits, even if just for the moment. May it be so.

In faith,
Caro

For Calling the Spirit Back
from Wandering the Earth
in Its Human Feet
by Joy Harjo

Put down that bag of potato chips, that white bread, that bottle of pop.
Turn off that cellphone, computer, and remote control.
Open the door, then close it behind you.
Take a breath offered by friendly winds. They travel the earth gathering essences of plants to clean.
Give it back with gratitude.
If you sing it will give your spirit lift to fly to the stars’ ears and back.
Acknowledge this earth who has cared for you since you were a dream planting itself precisely within your parents’ desire.
Let your moccasin feet take you to the encampment of the guardians who have known you before time, who will be there after time. They sit before the fire that has been there without time.
Let the earth stabilize your postcolonial insecure jitters.
Be respectful of the small insects, birds and animal people who accompany you.
Ask their forgiveness for the harm we humans have brought down upon them.
Don’t worry.
The heart knows the way though there may be high-rises, interstates, checkpoints, armed soldiers, massacres, wars, and those who will despise you because they despise themselves.
The journey might take you a few hours, a day, a year, a few years, a hundred, a thousand or even more.
Watch your mind. Without training it might run away and leave your heart for the immense human feast set by the thieves of time.
Do not hold regrets.
When you find your way to the circle, to the fire kept burning by the keepers of your soul, you will be welcomed.
You must clean yourself with cedar, sage, or other healing plant.
Cut the ties you have to failure and shame.
Let go the pain you are holding in your mind, your shoulders, your heart, all the way to your feet. Let go the pain of your ancestors to make way for those who are heading in our direction.
Ask for forgiveness.
Call upon the help of those who love you. These helpers take many forms: animal, element, bird, angel, saint, stone, or ancestor.
Call your spirit back. It may be caught in corners and creases of shame, judgment, and human abuse.
You must call in a way that your spirit will want to return.
Speak to it as you would to a beloved child.
Welcome your spirit back from its wandering. It may return in pieces, in tatters. Gather them together. They will be happy to be found after being lost for so long.
Your spirit will need to sleep awhile after it is bathed and given clean clothes.
Now you can have a party. Invite everyone you know who loves and supports you. Keep room for those who have no place else to go.
Make a giveaway, and remember, keep the speeches short.
Then, you must do this: help the next person find their way through the dark.

Support Food Insecurity
in our Native Communities

When we are blessed, we are called to share our blessings. During this crisis, many people in our Native communities are not able to work, without a safety net to catch them. Maine-Wabanaki REACH established a Community Response Fund to help those in need by putting food on the tables in Wabanaki homes.

You can be part of this call to action by:
  1. Making a donation to the REACH Community Response Fund at Call to Action: Wabanaki Food Security, or
  2. Sending a check directly to one of the Wabanaki community food pantries.

Kids' Art & Music
in Online Services
Scott Wheatley,
First Parish Music Director

As a fun summer project , I would like to encourage the children and youth of First Parish to send me photographs or pictures of their artwork to be used in our Sunday worship services.  No people, just nature, buildings, pets or examples of their own drawings, paintings or sculptures. In addition, any musically inclined children could submit short videos of them sharing their music-making, as long as the parents are comfortable with us sharing during a service.

The benefits are many: foster creativity in our youth, give them a role and voice in our worship services, and avoid copyright infringement using online content. Please help us feature the amazingly creative youth we have at First Parish. If you have questions or wish to send submissions, contact Scott:

Prominent Support for
Black Lives Matter

Everyone loved the giant HEART displayed on First Parish's tower for Valentine's Day this year. Our beautiful, historic building located in the heart of the City gives us a prominent position to now share our support for the Black Lives Matter movement. We hope this banner will help remind us of all the important work ahead to build a more just world.

Many thanks to Jaime Parker for his help in hanging the banner, and to John Tiedje, John Schaberg, and Francesca Galluccio-Steele for their help in making this banner a reality.
