Heat Factors in Death of
Former Dallas Cowboy

By Asia Nicole Alcorn
Texas Metro News

Sunday, temperatures reached 108 degrees, and according to predictions, it’s only going to get hotter.
Now would be the worst time to have air-conditioning issues, especially with reportings of AC part shortages all across Texas.
Steve Stewart, owner of Southern Comfort Mechanical Heating and A/C Specialists in Lewisville, told NBC 5 it could take two or more days for a technician to be sent out to a home.
With this heat, many can’t wait two days, especially if not properly hydrated.
Many wondered if the death of former NFL Dallas Cowboys running back, Marion Barber III occurred because of an instance like this.
Police found the 38-year-old dead in his apartment on June 1. Yesterday, police announced the cause of his death was heatstroke.
The thermostat was set to 91 degrees when authorities arrived, though the coroner reported Barber was “known to exercise in sauna-like conditions.”
Was his AC broken, or was he just working out? We may never know, but we hope to find all the answers soon.
Stay cool and hydrated everyone.

MY TRUTH
Visionary Leadership Wins
By Cheryl Smith

It was an exciting time at the National Newspaper Publishers Association’s (NNPA) annual convention in New Orleans in late June, under the direction of NNPA President Dr. Ben Chavis. Now who doesn’t love to visit New Orleans? Well, in addition to outstanding programming, an opportunity to hear some wonderful messages from dynamic speakers, a wonderful performance from Stephanie Mills and an opportunity to see my classmate, Bobby R. Henry of the Westside Gazette, receive Lifetime Achievement honors.

National Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month Takes Stigma Away from
Discussing Fibroids
By Sylvia Dunnavant Hines

Dallas County and City of Dallas officials have acknowledged the impact of fibroid tumors by proclaiming July as Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month. That designation is supported by similar national proclamations as well as Texas House Bill 1966 that was presented by State Representative Senfronia Thompson. “As I have worked with organizations, medical experts, business leaders, other non-profits, patients, and community leaders we were able to collectively work with the former Dean of Women Legislators in Texas, State Rep. Thompson,” said former State Rep. Loraine Birabil.

Dallas considers clear backpack mandate for school safety

The move comes just months after the Uvalde massacre

Dallas students will only be allowed to use clear backpacks next school year if officials sign off on a policy aimed at improving campus safety. The shift would come just months after the deadly Uvalde massacre, which refocused education leaders across the country on preventing future school shootings.

NNPA Newswire/BlackPressUSA
By Stacy M. Brown

A search team has found the unserved warrant charging a white woman in the 1955 kidnapping of Emmett Till. The Associated Press reported that the team searched a Mississippi courthouse basement for evidence about the African American teenager’s lynching, and now relatives of the victim want authorities to finally arrest the woman nearly 70 years later.
The Path

As we walk through life's journey, we leave footprints. Some just show where we are going. Others redirect us when we get lost. Still others remain to guide those we leave behind. I see your footprints.
