Do You Know About the H2O University?
You may not get real university credits for a course at the H2O University, but you will get real world experience. And that’s what civil engineer Marcia Ferreira hopes for by providing a forum to share knowledge and promote networking.

The H2O University meets at Headquarters and is open to all district employees. There are two to three sessions per quarter, each session running approx. 45 minutes.

There is a reason that sessions are not live-streamed or recorded.  Marcia believes face time with other employees promotes learning and a meaningful exchange of information and ideas. The H2O University also offers employees a venue to practice their budding public speaking skills and Marcia is always looking for new topics.

Teaching comes naturally to Marcia , who has taught graduate courses in environmental engineering at Loyola Marymount University since 2016. She joined Metropolitan in 2013 as an intern while completing her PhD in civil engineering at UCLA before securing a full-time position in the Water Resource Management Group in 2014.

To get on the mailing list for upcoming university “courses,” or to brainstorm ideas as a presenter, email Marcia .
Credit Union Merger Offers More to MWD Employees
For years, Metropolitan employees have had access to the MWD Federal Credit Union, which offers great convenience for those working at HQ, online banking services for all members and many financial products.

Thanks to a recent merger with Certified Federal (a division of Vons Credit Union), product options, number of affiliated branches and member services are growing.

“This partnership brings many advantages to members” said Michael Cooper, FCU Board Chair. “Our Board determined that Vons Credit Union was a great fit for our membership.”

The result is a full-service financial institution offering savings and checking accounts, auto loans, credit cards and home mortgages. Because Certified Federal is a not-for-profit financial cooperative, they return profits to members through lower loan rates, higher savings yields and fewer fees than traditional banks. MWD employees, their families and household members are eligible to join. Just stop by the office at HQ or reach out at [email protected] g

Employees now have nine additional branches in Southern California, 30,000 surcharge-free ATMS and a new mobile banking app is coming soon. Click here for details and special offers.
It's All in the Family for this Planner/Scheduler
Tagging along with his father, an MWD inspector, to Skinner and Live Oak Reservoir in the early 1970s, Greg Widman had an opportunity many kids dream of. He got to see heavy construction equipment up close as well as pipeline construction in progress. No Tonka trucks here – he experienced the real thing.

Those visits instilled a respect for the District that was further nurtured by talks at the dinner table. His stepmother was also a Water Treatment Operator at La Verne and later worked in the Water Quality Lab.

Greg is now a Planner/ Scheduler for the Eastern Conveyance & Distribution Region, based at the Wadsworth Pumping/Hydro-generating Facility at Diamond Valley Lake. He plans maintenance activities for the distribution system and helps coordinate shutdowns. He also coordinates emergency response for the Eastern Region and supports Real Property in managing revenue leases, entry permits, and other issues.

Greg followed a career path familiar to many in the water industry. He started with the City of La Verne and then worked for Three Valleys MWD. With solid training under his belt, he began his career at Met as a Treatment Operator at Skinner, supporting a system he watched being built 20 years before.
New hires, transfers, promotions & retirements are posted here each month.
