Mews News:

Little One, Big Heart

Little One has been through a lot this summer. In early June, he was surrendered to Oakland Animal Services when his owner became ill and was no longer able to care for him. Shortly after, he made his way to Nine Lives, where his second chance began.

Sadly, this sweet ten-year-old kitty wasn't in the best shape when he arrived. His fur was patchy with noticeable hair loss, and his body was covered in skin lesions. He also had an upper respiratory infection (URI) and severe dental disease, including tooth resorption — a condition known to be extremely painful.

Our team quickly got to work, treating his skin condition with medication and a special diet, running blood screenings, and monitoring his URI symptoms. Once he was healthy enough, we ushered him to our clinic for dental surgery. There, the talented Dr. Desai removed eight of his troublesome teeth and gave the rest a thorough cleaning.

Little One 💛

It wasn't long before our efforts paid off. Almost immediately, Little One's appetite improved and he started embracing his playful side. Now, after more than two and a half months in our care, Little One is thriving and ready to find his forever home.

Despite his senior status, Little One is still full of energy and curiosity. This spunky kitty loves exploring new places (aka escaping from his condo whenever he gets the chance!) and rolling around in catnip. But most of all, he adores humans and is always ready to shower you with affection.

Little One has so much love to give and is eager to find someone who will treasure him in return. If you're looking for a devoted companion, Little One could be the perfect match for you. Visit our Adoption Center today and meet this adorable senior kitty in person!

Liam's Corner

As we enter the last month of summer, Kitten Season in the Bay Area is still going strong. Behind the scenes, rescue organizations like ours are working tirelessly to give our tiniest feline friends a second chance at life.

Amidst this whirlwind of activity, I want to share a heartwarming story of resilience and hope — the story of Mandalorian, a brave 3-month-old tabby who has captured our hearts.

Mandalorian and his littermates Grogu and Bo-Katan came to us from the San Jose Animal Care Center in early July. From the outset, these kittens faced numerous health challenges. They were terrified and sick, suffering from upper respiratory infections, gastrointestinal issues, and hair loss. Mandalorian also had a bulging, lacerated eye — a painful reminder of a past trauma.

Our dedicated veterinary team sprang into action, providing the kittens with essential medical care. Mandalorian underwent surgery at our clinic to remove the injured eye, ensuring him a future free from pain and discomfort. Antibiotics and blood work followed his surgery, along with another procedure to treat an abscess. And of course, all three kittens received routine vaccines, microchips, and spay/neuter surgeries.

Mandalorian 🧡

For the next several weeks, Mandalorian and his siblings stayed with one of our amazing foster families. Under their care, they blossomed into healthy and strong kittens and worked on their social skills. Today, they're at our Adoption Center, ready to embark on their final quest — finding their forever homes!

Mandalorian, Bo-Katan, and Grogu (L-R)

Mandalorian’s transformation from a vulnerable, frightened kitten into a healthy, exuberant ball of fur represents the potential for countless other kittens awaiting rescue. With that in mind, I’m excited to share that Nine Lives is teaming up with San Jose Animal Care & Services — combining resources, expertise, and determination — to save even more precious lives.

Through this collaboration, we're not only rescuing abandoned and sick kittens but also providing high-quality spay and neuter services for the feral cat population. This two-pronged approach eases immediate suffering of individual cats and creates a more sustainable solution for our community. When organizations like ours come together, the capacity to save lives multiplies exponentially.

As we embrace this last month of summer, Mandalorian's story reminds us that every life is worth fighting for. Kitten Season may bring its challenges, but it also brings stories of courage, compassion, and second chances.

Please join us this Kitten Season in our mission to help more kittens like Mandalorian. Together, we have the power to make a difference – one whisker, one paw, one life at a time.
