My spiritual director for many years was S. Margaret Brackett, OSM. I am deeply grateful to S. Peg for all she taught me.
One day S. Peg shared that during her vocation as a sister she was often asked to change roles and take on a new job. She confessed that this brought mixed reactions. Sometimes she was pleased with the change. Sometimes the change brought initial resistance. There were those jobs she didn't want to take on. There were jobs for which she felt unqualified. How did she resolve this resistance?
"Every time I resisted I would take off the ring that I wore as a sister and read the inscription inside the ring -
"It is the Lord!"
I cannot find words that adequately express my response when she shared this with me. Moved? Inspired? Awed? All of that and more. What an example and lesson!
Christ's Call to Us
When we are asked to do what we don't want to do, when we encounter a task we don't feel prepared for, when we find ourselves in a situation that we feel inadequate to handle or for which we are fearful, let us recall those words in S. Peg's ring.
"It is the Lord!"
Christ will see us through His call to us. Christ will guide and strengthen us. The Lord will point the way...His way. He goes before us. As the Risen Lord said to Peter by the Sea of Tiberias, so He calls to us,
"Follow me,"
