Hope Center opens to first residents in former Sheraton Hotel
New Castle County opened the Hope Center to its first guests on Tuesday afternoon. Seventy people were among the first to take shelter at the converted hotel as officials work to get vulnerable populations in to transitional housing before the worst of the Winter months hits. Residents arrived on shuttles and went through COVID-19 testing protocols to ensure the virus remains under control and cannot spread through the facility.
County partners with Stop the Violence Prayer Chain on toy drive
County Executive Matt Meyer delivered dozens of toys to the Stop the Violence Prayer Chain's toy giveaway event on Friday afternoon. Hundreds of children participated in the giveaway, taking home free toys for the holiday season. Toys were divided based on age to ensure there were offerings for the youngest children in need and older children as well. Presents ranged from coloring books to bikes, which were raffled off for appropriate ages.
"Grandma Lottie" celebrates 104th birthday with drive-by party
County Executive Matt Meyer visited "Grandma Lottie" Banks for her 104th birthday celebration outside her home on Thursday afternoon. The Dunleith resident has been a foster grandparent in Delaware's Foster Grandparent Program for over 35 years to dozens of children in New Castle County. She also served in the NCC Head Start program past her 100th birthday, further exemplifying her commitment to New Castle County children in need.
County continues offering pop-up testing sites next week
New Castle County will continue offering regular pop-up testing sites across the county, in addition regular testing sites operated by the State of Delaware. Any resident can get tested regardless of symptoms and tests are free, quick, easy and painless. Results are usually returned in 24-48 hours.
