Benchmark Assessment

If you are planning to participate in the 2024-25 Benchmark Assessment Reporting this is a friendly reminder on the updated requirements for funding.

Please note that the Michigan law has changed how Benchmark Assessment funding is allocated to the districts. In previous years, the funding was a fixed $12.50 per student allocation; under the new legislation, the $11.5 million allotment is split among all eligible districts based on each district’s K-8 membership count. Therefore, the Michigan Department of Education has stated that it is critical for districts planning to participate to adhere to the timelines this year. The Michigan Department of Education will be unable to grant extensions to individual districts due to the impact that would have on the calculation and distribution of awards. All districts should be working with their benchmark assessment vendors and the Michigan Data Hub (MIDH) now to ensure their benchmark score data and mode of instruction data are/have been published to the Michigan DataHub.

Please refer to the resources below for additional information on how to ensure this data, required for the Benchmark Assessment initiative has published to the Michigan DataHub:

Understanding Deprecated Descriptors in Ed-Fi

In early August, Michigan DataHub upgraded to Ed-Fi Data Standard 4, Version 6.2, which introduced some deprecated descriptors. Descriptors are predefined lists of values, such as grade levels or staff classifications, that help ensure data consistency.

As the Ed-Fi standards evolve, certain descriptors may become deprecated. While these deprecated descriptors will still function for now, it’s recommended to switch to the updated versions before the next Ed-Fi upgrade, as deprecated values will no longer be supported in future versions.

For example, some Staff Classification Descriptors were deprecated to align with the Common Education Data Standards (CEDS) K12 Staff Classifications. One of these is ‘Assistant Principal,’ which may now appear in your Student Information System as ‘DEPRECATED: Assistant Principal.’ While this value can still be used until the next upgrade, districts can also start using the non-deprecated version, such as ‘School Administrator’.

Although districts can continue using deprecated descriptors until the next upgrade, switching to non-deprecated values sooner will help ensure smoother system performance moving forward.
