Washington Ave BID Pays Tribute to Muhammad Ali

 

This February, the Washington Ave Business Improvement District (BID) is partnering with HistoryMiami Museum to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the historic bout between reigning champ Sonny Liston and up-and-coming challenger Cassius Clay—later known as Muhammad Ali—for boxing’s World Heavyweight Championship.


The famed 5th Street Gym will provide an immersive exhibit, titled "I Shook Up the World" and curated by HistoryMiami Museum, that will offer visitors insight into the life of Muhammad Ali.


The exhibition showcases 49 captivating images captured by Miami Herald staff photographers on the unforgettable evening of February 25, 1964, when the world witnessed the historic face-off between the two boxing legends.


The exhibition space will be open to the public from February 23 through April 1. The Washington Avenue BID invites the community, boxing enthusiasts, and admirers of Muhammad Ali from around the world to join in this momentous tribute to a man who exemplified resilience, greatness, and an enduring legacy that transcends time.


Tickets for the event are priced at $10 for adults and $5 for those under 18 years of age.

Beyond attending in-person meetings, residents, businesses and stakeholders can continue to watch these meetings live on the city’s website, our government-access cable television station MBTV (Breezeline Channel 660, AT&T U-verse Channel 99, and Hotwire Fision Digital Access Channel 395), Facebook page, YouTube page and via Zoom. TRAFFIC IMPACT: MIAMI MARATHON WEEKEND

Life Time Tropical 5k


On Saturday, January 27, 2024, the Life Time Tropical 5k will race through the city. The race will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Watson Island by the Miami Children’s Museum. Participants will enter the city via the MacArthur Causeway, south on Alton Rd and finish on South Point Dr.


All participants are expected to complete the course by 9:30 a.m. to allow the roads to reopen. Most roads will be open before that time due to reopening procedures.


Street Closure Times

  • MacArthur Causeway EB - 2 lanes closed (1 EB lane to remain open) from 4 a.m. – 9 a.m.
  • Alton Road NB 5 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
  • Alton Road SB 5 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
  • South Pointe Drive WB 4 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

Life Time Miami Marathon and Half Marathon


On Sunday, January 28, 2024, the 22nd Annual Life Time Miami Marathon and Half Marathon returns with thousands of participants. Runners will make their way from Downtown Miami over the MacArthur Causeway and through Miami Beach, while exiting via the Venetian Causeway, as per the map below.


All participants are expected to complete the course by 10 a.m. to allow the roads to fully reopen. Most roads will be open before that time due to reopening procedures.


The Miami Beach Police Department is working closely with the organizers to minimize the traffic impact.


Street Closure Times

  • MacArthur Causeway EB 2 lanes closed (1 EB lane to remain open) from 5 a.m. – 8:10 a.m.
  • Venetian Causeway WB 6 a.m. – 10 a.m.
  • Miami Beach Area 5 a.m. – 10 a.m.


We recommend that those wishing to enter or exit Miami Beach between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. utilize the Julia Tuttle Causeway. Roads will be closed and managed by the Miami, Miami Beach and Miami-Dade Police Departments, who will assist with traffic through intersections between gaps of runners.

Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day


Today, January 26, is Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day! The goal is to raise awareness to ensure every qualified worker claims and receives their EITC. To claim the EITC, you must file a federal tax return even if you owe no tax and are not required to file.

Free Tax Preparation Services


Recognized as a best practice site by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for its fast and reliable tax preparation program, the City of Miami Beach will once again offer free income tax preparation services from Feb. 6 through Apr. 10, 2024, for households earning $60,000 or less and persons with disabilities.


Dedicated to making annual tax filing obligations less costly by preparing accurate and detailed tax returns, the city’s income tax preparation services are offered by appointment at the Office of Housing and Community Services at 765 17 Street. The service is offered in partnership with Branches, Inc. and the IRS via its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

 

Tax preparation services will be offered in person on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

 

Appointments can now be made through our online appointment link: https://calendly.com/cmbvitataxes/appointments or by calling 305.673.7491. Special services are offered to taxpayers with limited English skills or disabilities.


Residents are reminded to bring the following documentation:

  • Valid government-issued identification card
  • Social Security card for all persons declared as dependents on the tax return
  • All 2022 W-2s and information for other income
  • Information for all deductions (including charitable contributions)
  • Bank account information for direct deposit of refund
  • Forms 1095-A, B, or C (ACA Statements)
  • Total paid to daycare providers and their tax ID number, if applicable
  • Birth dates for everyone listed on the return, including spouse and/or dependents.
  • Copy of last year's tax return
  • Identity theft PIN, if applicable 

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Applications Open Soon


The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program assists very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market.


Applications open Monday, February 5, 2024, at 12 a.m. and close Monday, February 19, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Only one application per household is permitted. Learn more.

CERT Training


The Miami Beach Fire Department Division of Emergency Management will be offering Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training at 2300 Pine Tree Drive throughout the month of February.


Interested individuals can choose from the following dates: February 13-14, February 20-21 and February 27-28. The course is 8 hours online and 16 hours in-class.


CERT is a national training program under FEMA that aims to educate residents, businesses and employees about disaster preparedness. CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace during an emergency until first responders arrive.


Participants will learn disaster preparedness, CERT organization, disaster medical operations such as Stop-The-Bleed, disaster psychology, fire safety and utility control, light search and rescue and more.

South Florida Saves: GMX Frequent User Discount Program


Frequent drivers who pay 40 or more tolls in a calendar month on GMX expressways (SR 112, SR 836, SR 874, SR 878, and SR 924) are eligible for a 20% SunPass account credit with South Florida Saves. The program runs from now until June 30, 2024 with no registration required.


GMX has allocated $10 million toward the South Florida Saves program in its 2024 fiscal year budget.

Permanent Flag Box in Canopy Park


Girl Scout Troop 2013 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Miami Beach Post 3559 worked alongside the City of Miami Beach to place a permanent flag box in Canopy Park at 701 West Ave.


Residents and visitors are invited to place their tattered, torn and faded U.S. flags in the box until the flags can be properly disposed of in a respectful manner.

Volunteers Needed

 

Volunteers needed! The City of Miami Beach is looking for volunteers to help homeless, free roaming community cats through the Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return (TNVR) method. In addition, SoBe Cats is looking for volunteers to work at the Kitty Campus adoption facility, and/or to be a part of a feeding program.

 

The feeders play a vital role in the mission of SoBe Cats because not only do they supply the cat colonies with food and fresh water for survival, but they also act as the eyes and ears for cats in need of TNVR. Register to be a feeder.

Download our new Miami Beach Gov app now!


The mobile app brings the resources of city government directly to residents and businesses.


You can use it to report concerns, check current beach conditions, track the free citywide trolley, pay fees, stream MBTV live, stay current on city news and view a comprehensive calendar of meetings and events.


The new app replaces the Miami Beach eGov app that was released in 2014. Current eGov users will automatically receive the Miami Beach Gov app via a software upgrade without the need to create a new account.

You're never too old to play! Free classes that promote a healthy lifestyle while having fun are available for Miami Beach adults 55 and older.
