MB MAGAZINE

Fall 2024 Issue of MB Magazine is Out Now!

Here's a sneak peek of what's inside the latest edition of MB magazine. This year marked the 80th anniversary of the largest amphibious invasion in military history — the day the Allies began to take back Europe during World War II and put an end to Nazi tyranny. What many people may not know is that Miami Beach played an essential role in preparing hundreds of thousands of troops that came to Miami Beach during the war years to train in our hotels and beaches as you’ll read in “Paradise at War” on page 18.

A little-known team of excellence assessors is one of the secrets why Miami Beach is such a clean city compared to others that host millions of visitors. Most people never see them because much of their work is performed undercover as you’ll discover in “Psst: It’s a Secret” on page 22.

Art Week Miami Beach from December 2-8 marks a homecoming for artist Jen Stark, who got her start in South Beach. Read more on page 38 in “Elevate Española Brings Homecoming for South Beach Artist."

Please remember to vote on Tuesday, November 5. You'll find a special election guide on page 50.

TRANSPORTATION

Mount Sinai Link Service

The City of Miami Beach has launched a new Mount Sinai Link shuttle van service which provides similar service to the now discontinued Miami-Dade County Route 115 — ensuring a reliable and consistent transit connection between North Beach and Mid Beach as well as a direct connection to Mount Sinai Medical Center.

The Mount Sinai Link operates 7 days a week from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and serves all stops north of 41 Street previously covered by Route 115. The approximate frequency of service will be 60-70 minutes, ensuring regular service. In addition to the expanded Freebee On-Demand service to mitigate the loss of Route 115, the new Mount Sinai Link will offer a valuable connection to Miami-Dade County Bus Route 150 “Miami Beach Airport Express” at 41 Street, providing a convenient link to Miami International Airport.

41 Street Traffic Re-Circulation Pilot Program

In an effort to improve mobility for residents traveling north and south along Sheridan and Royal Palm avenues as well as crossing 41 Street, the city has implemented a pilot program during peak afternoon hours.

Traffic pattern restrictions are in effect Monday through Friday between 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

During the six-month pilot, left turns are prohibited at:

  • Sheridan Ave onto 41 Street in the SB and NB directions
  • Royal Palm Ave onto 41 Street in the SB and NB directions
  • Sheridan Ave onto 40 Street in the NB direction only

Two-way traffic is being maintained on Royal Palm and Sheridan Avenues, with police resources deployed at the intersections of Sheridan Avenue and 41 Street, and Royal Palm Avenue and 41 Street. On-street parking is not affected.

These changes are intended to ease congestion caused by the influx of vehicles that travel through this area. Learn more.

Use the Transit App to Track the Trolley

The Miami Beach Trolley Tracker is currently undergoing improvements and has been temporarily removed from the Miami Beach Gov app. In the meantime, we encourage riders to download the free Transit App for efficient and reliable trolley tracking.

Alternatively, our customer service team is available at 305.673.7117 to provide trolley ETAs directly. Users can also text the City of Miami Beach stop ID number (available on all trolley stop signs) to 786.981.4545 to receive arrival times via text message.

We are committed to providing our residents and visitors with the best possible transit experience and hope to have an integrated trolley tracker back up and running within the Miami Beach Gov App in the near future.

The Miami Beach free citywide trolley service operates 15 hours a day, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week at approximately 20-minute average service frequency along each route.

Fertilizer Ban

Biscayne Bay provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. To help keep the bay healthy, the City of Miami Beach has prohibited the use of fertilizer application from May 15 through November 1. Show our bay some love and help keep it fertilizer free.

For more information on fertilizer application outside of the restricted period, visit www.MBRisingAbove.com/fertilizers.

Fight the Bite

Take precautions against mosquito-borne illness by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations and wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts when possible - especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active.

To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.

  • Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
  • Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
  • Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.

Disturbing Sea Turtles is a Crime

Sea turtle season in Miami Beach runs from April 1 through October 31. The Florida Marine Protection Act makes it illegal to handle or disturb a sea turtle, its hatchlings, nest or eggs. Violations of the code can include fines and time in prison.

To report a violation, or if you find a sick, disoriented or injured sea turtle, contact any of the following numbers:

Miami Beach Police Department: 305.673.7901

Miami-Dade County Sea Turtle Alert Hotline: 305.310.3046

Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Ban & Chainsaw Phase Out Period

Gas-powered leaf blowers are banned in Miami Beach. Additionally, gas-powered chainsaws are now being phased out per ordinance 2024-4589. These initiatives are part of the city's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Transitioning away from gas-powered leaf blowers and chainsaws not only helps to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, but also helps to improve water quality, mitigate noise pollution and promote operational effectiveness.

The phase out period for gas-powered chainsaws:

MIAMI BEACH FIRE DEPARTMENT

Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane season began on June 1 and runs through November 30. Make sure you have a plan, build a kit and stay informed this hurricane season.

The City of Miami Beach wants to ensure the safety of all its residents, businesses and visitors. Visit our hurricane webpage for tips on how to stay safe this hurricane season and watch our hurricane special below, which will air regularly on MBTV (Channel 660 on Breezeline or Channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse) through the end of November.

Please ensure you’re registered to receive emergency alerts via text notifications from the city by texting MBAlert to 888777.

Fire Prevention Week

With Fire Prevention Week coming up from October 6 to 12, our fire department encourages all residents to ensure their smoke alarms are functioning properly.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that working smoke alarms lower the risk of death in a home fire by more than 50%. Unfortunately, about three out of five home fire fatalities occur in homes without smoke alarms or where the alarms are not operational. Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, providing critical time to escape safely.

CERT Training

The Miami Beach Fire Department's Division of Emergency Management will be offering a Basic In-class Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training at Fire Station 2.

The three-day training will be offered in person on Sunday, October 27, Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3.

9 AM - 5 PM

2300 Pine Tree Drive

CERT is a free national training program under FEMA that aims to educate residents, businesses and employees about disaster preparedness. CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace during an emergency until first responders arrive.

Participants will learn disaster preparedness, CERT organization, disaster medical operations such as Stop-The-Bleed, disaster psychology, fire safety and utility control, light search and rescue and more.
